Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To plan, organize, and supervise staff on assigned shifts engaged in the care and custody of adult prisoners incarcerated in a minimum, medium, and maximum-security facility; to instruct and assist subordinates in the performance of their assigned duties and to perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The Correctional Sergeant level recognizes positions in the Correctional Officer series that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluating the work of subordinates. Incumbents supervise sworn and non-sworn staff on assigned shifts and perform administrative functions in the field of corrections.
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in jail operations and inmate supervision at a level equivalent to the County’s class of Correctional Officer with at least two (2) years as a Correctional Officer II.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by college level coursework in law enforcement or related field is desirable.

The written examination may include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, matching, and/or essay type questions directly related to the required knowledge and abilities for this classification.
Oral Examination (60%)
The oral examination will be conducted by a panel of raters who will assess and rate the degree to which each applicant demonstrates the knowledge and abilities required for this classification. Applicants’ responses to a series of job related questions, as well as their education and experience, will be rated in relation to the requirements for this classification.
The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification. For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey level) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required).
