Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     WHAT WE OFFER:

    Exercises direct supervision over sworn and non-sworn personnel

    Plans, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of officers assigned to various functions and programs including field patrol and investigations; provide overall technical and administrative direction to personnel on an assigned shift.

    Provide or coordinate staff training; advise and instruct sworn and nonsworn staff regarding applicable policies, procedures and tactics; work with employees to correct deficiencies.

    Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing field operations services; implement policies and procedures.

    Participate in the preparation and administration of the assigned budget; submit budget recommendations; recommend purchase of supplies and equipment; monitor expenditures.

    Supervise and participate in all normal shift duties as assigned, including enforcing local and State laws, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid and transporting offenders.

    Respond to major crimes, accident scenes and emergencies; assume initial command.

    Plan, coordinate, and supervise traffic control activities for special events, parades, and street closures.

    Review the work of departmental personnel to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures; review reports submitted by officers to verify completeness and the meeting of prescribed standards.

    Prepare various reports on operations and activities.

    Assist in the development and implementation of grant programs and projects as assigned.

    Maintain and facilitate public relations and cooperative working relationships with news media, schools, local organizations and the general public; attend and speak at various community functions and meetings; respond to citizen complaints and requests for information; prepare press releases and confers with the media in matters related to assigned activities.

     OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES

    Operations, services and activities of a law enforcement field operations program.

    Modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, traffic control, and investigation and identification techniques.

    Recent court decisions and how they affect department and division operations.

    Functions and objectives of Federal, State, and other local law enforcement agencies.

    Use of firearms and other modern police equipment.

    First aid principles, practices and techniques.

    Self defense tactics.

    Pertinent Federal, State and local laws and ordinances, particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance, and traffic control.

    Modern investigative methods including interviewing and interrogation techniques.

    Basic budgeting procedures and techniques.

    Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

    Skill in:

    Operate firearms and other modern police equipment.

    Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment.

    Operate a motor vehicle safely.

    Ability to:

    Supervise, organize, and review the work of officers on assigned shift.

    Participate in the recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, and practices for providing effective and efficient law enforcement services.

    Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

    Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine proper course of action.

    Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.

    Obtain information through interview and interrogations.

    Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate and use facts and evidence.

    Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively.

    Interpret and explain City and Department policies and procedures.

    Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports.

    Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and to administer first aid.

    Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.

    Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Experience and Training Guidelines:

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    Three years of law enforcement experience equivalent to that of a Police Officer II.

    Training:

    Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field.

    License and Certificates:

    Possession of, or have ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

    Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate and ability to obtain a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate within the required period of time.

    Special Requirements:

    Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

    Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, electrical hazards, dust, mechanical hazards, explosive materials and contagious diseases; availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by call.
