Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Responsibilities
Typical Allocation of Duties
Supervision - 25%
Supervise assigned personnel in emergency and non-emergency settings. Assign, direct, evaluate, inspect, and recommends discipline of personnel.
Investigation - 15%
Supervise and participate in the investigation of crimes and traffic accidents; gather evidence and interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects; prepare related reports.
Enforcement - 15%
Supervise and participate in the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and campus rules and regulations; issue citation and make arrests.
Public assistance - 15%
Provide emergency and non-emergency assistance to students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors, including assisting stranded motorists.
Training and Certification - 15%
Participates in department training and certification functions.
Prepare reports - 15%
Prepare a variety or regular and special reports, including incident reports, and reviews reports completed by subordinates.
Required Qualifications
Required Experience
Associate's degree and three (3) years of related work experience or experience can be substituted for education. Certification by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
