Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     General Summary

    Under general supervision of the Chief of Police, the Police Clerk will assist in day-to-day operations of the police department by performing clerical work requiring the application of various complex work methods and procedures, in accordance with the laws and regulations controlling the employing department, and with departmental functions, policies, and practices.


    Essential Job Functions

    • Responsible for records management for all police department records including reports properly processed and cataloged with appropriate documentation, retention within established procedures, and transformation to long-term retention methods such as scanning and digital media.
    • Maintains various records filing systems used to manage, access, and preserve electronic and paper records of criminal justice activities within established procedures.
    • Processes police department open records/public information requests in accordance with state law and city and departmental polices including entering, tracking, pulling related documents appropriate for release, and proper redaction.
    • Performs information management functions including computer data entry and uploads, as well as searches and retrieval from department and city systems.
    • Performs clerical functions including preparation of letters, reports, forms, and other documentation as assigned.
    • Answer and address incoming calls in a timely and polite manner, respond to inquiries, requests and complaints regarding department services and policies, and/or determine appropriate person to respond and route calls accordingly.
    • Receive visitors with a great deal of tact, diplomacy, professionalism and high standards of customer service.
    • Collect fees and process payments within established procedures.
    • Performs record destruction according to record retention requirements.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
    • Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
    • Two years of records experience in police department.

    AND*

    • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of submitting application.
    • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license (or valid within 30 days).

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

    • Working knowledge of office practices, procedures, equipment, and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Share Point and other software applications (Microsoft Office products a plus).
    • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing including proficient listening skills, rules of grammar, practices of document preparation.
    • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and deals tactfully and effectively with people.
    • Knowledge of statutes and ordinances regulating the distribution of information and other applicable laws or ordinances preferred or ability to learn quickly.
    • Exceptional organizational skills.
    • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
    • Must have the ability to maintain positive working relationships with fellow employees and have excellent team work skills .
    • Must be detailed oriented.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
