    Department Summary

    The Division of Student Life supports the University's academic mission through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four departments, the University Career Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Erb Memorial Union, and Physical Education & Recreation, and a number of key programs including the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.

    The Office of the Vice President for Student Life provides the vision for and oversight of the Division's departments, programs, and initiatives. The Vice President's administrative staff provides key administrative, strategic, financial, human resources, and campus-wide student support.

    The purpose of Student Government Engagement and Success (SGES) is to help students grow, thrive, and develop as they conquer institutional issues of importance to them. Through leadership education, democratic decision-making, financial management, and operation of key governmental services, SGES lays the groundwork for student leaders to practice and hone the skills necessary to become future leaders in government, civics, and public policy. In addition to leadership development, SGES coordinates four university-wide service centers: student advocacy; student organization finance; student government event management; and student organization creative services.

    Position Summary

    Reporting to the SGES Assistant Director, the Student Program and Policy Advisor counsels student organization leaders on program spending and compliance matters, ensuring decisions adhere to university and student government policy. This position oversees program activity and spending processes for 200 student organizations, assists with the operational aspects of ASUO’s annual fee-setting process, and bears responsibility for the leadership, supervision, and operational oversight of a service center that provides information, guidance, and transactional spending support to student organization leaders.

    This position will develop a strong knowledge base of rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to student organizations and will be expected to retain, communicate, and educate student organization leaders on the appropriate and allowable forms of spending.

    This position is not eligible for remote work.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Experience supervising students or entry-level professionals, including hiring, training, and evaluating staff.
    • Experience leading a project or managing a complex project involving programs, services, or initiatives.

    • Demonstrated ability to build a knowledge base around policy and procedures.
    • Effective communication skills and customer-service orientation.
    • Understanding of and enthusiasm for the advancement of student learning and an interest in helping students to understand university processes, policies, systems, and financial guidelines used to guide student organization spending activity.
    • Strong organizational skills including the ability to demonstrate initiative, set priorities, evaluate progress, and achieve unit goals.
    • Ability to interpret and apply policy provisions to situations consistently.
    • Intermediate-level Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to work with multiple worksheets, filter data, use integrated functions, and manipulate databases in order to prepare useful reports and problem-solve issues.
    • Skilled in analytical reasoning, sound decision-making and judgment, and able to work independently.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Supervision and advising experience in higher education.
    • Experience working with a project or spending tracking software.
    • Direct experience managing a service center or other experience that demonstrates strong organizational skills and the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines.
