    The Office of Conflict, Resolution, and Policy invites applications for a Director of Equal Opportunity. This position functions as a key leader within the Office of Conflict, Resolution, and Policy, which helps comprise UM’s newly established Division of People and Culture. The position directs and oversees the daily operations of the University of Montana’s compliance with applicable civil rights and equal opportunity laws and regulations, and serves to further the UM’s related goals and initiatives.

    Key administrative duties include:
    • Managing the receipt, processing, investigation, resolution, and reporting of formal and informal complaints of non-Title IX discrimination and harassment.
    • Developing strategic plans to proactively educate students and employees on equal opportunity efforts.
    • Delivering equitable outcomes to students and employees in matters on the basis of protected-class status.
    • Developing, recommending, and implementing appropriate policies, procedures, operations, and training curricula for campus related to civil rights and equal opportunity compliance.

    This position furthers both the University’s Enterprise Risk Management Plan and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan by providing expertise and capacity to address campus reports of protected-class harm through prevention and resolution systems. The Director of Equal Opportunity primarily serves UM employees and institutional employment objectives; however, in partnership with UM’s Title IX Coordinator, also functions as a critical support to students and the UM Affiliation.

    Position Details
    • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
    • Salary for this position is $94,000-$99,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years’ experience in a relevant field such as civil rights/eeo law; human resources; public administration; or student affairs.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret federal, state and local equal opportunity, civil rights, and non-discrimination laws and regulations that apply to the employment and educational settings.
    • Excellent communication (written and oral) and critical thinking skills, including the ability to problem solve, analyze, summarize, and effectively present data in a clear, concise, sound, and supportable fashion.
    • Demonstrated organizational, planning, and time management skills with a preference for the ability to manage a high-volume caseload with competing deadlines and priorities.
    • Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse backgrounds with high-conflict situations such as civil rights investigations, employee/labor relations, student discipline, and/or law enforcement proceedings.
    • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • A juris doctorate or other advanced degree in a related field (for example MSW, MBA, or M.Ed.), together with the ability to demonstrate its applicability.
    • Experience with mediation and implementation of informal resolution agreements.
    • Experience in broad matters of employment compliance, including such topics as: recruitment and hiring, contract interpretation, workplace conflict resolution, accommodations, investigation, and grievance processes.
    • Demonstrated experience in legal/policy writing and analysis.
    • Working familiarity with higher education administration.
    • Experience working with diverse populations in a higher education setting.
    • Competency in developing and delivering training or professional development content to varied audiences.
    • Sensitivity to and thorough understanding of the impact of trauma on individuals and the impacts on process access and cognitive ability.
    • Prior completion of civil rights-based investigator training by a nationally recognized organization (NACUA, ATIXA, EEOC).
    • Demonstrated experience with Banner and Maxient.
