  • A New York City Council Member is seeking a dynamic Policy and Budget Director who will be responsible for overseeing all legislative and budget matters for the office. The Legislative & Budget Director will work closely with the Council Member, the City Council Legislative Division, advocates, constituents, and government partners to advance equity and uplift the Member’s constituents.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Serve as policy and budgetary lead for New York City Council Majority Whip and Chair of the Council’s Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
    • Craft legislation and usher to passage bills sponsored by the Council Member. Secure sponsors, build support among stakeholders, generate educational and promotional materials, and ensure successful and efficient legislative progress.
    • Administer allocation of Council Member budget toward in-district capital projects and organizations providing community-based programming and services. Provide research and policy support with respect to citywide budgeting process.
    • Architect legislative and oversight hearings of Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
    • Manage and help to facilitate negotiations over land use items (e.g., rezonings) in Member’s district that come before the Council.
    • Write public-facing content, and supply talking points, relevant data, and other briefing materials for Council Member.
    • Liaise with community members regarding budget, legislation and represent Council Member at rallies, forums, community meetings, etc.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 3 years of policy experience in government or advocacy organizations.
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to synthesize complex information.
    • Ability to be an effective researcher, data analyst, and coalition builder.
    • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, often under short and shifting deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
    • Creative, flexible thinker and strategic problem-solver.
    • Highly organized and attentive to detail.
    • Ability to effectively work with a team and independently, and capable of interacting with a broad range of individuals.
    • J.D. or graduate degree in urban planning, public policy, or related field is highly preferred.

    New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
