AAPI Data Director of Policy
  • University of California, Riverside
  • Riverside, CA FULL_TIME
  • Position Information

AAPI Data has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary as a nationally recognized publisher of disaggregated data for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. AAPI Data is a champion for data equity – data is disaggregated to ensure our populations are visible, accessible to community leaders who advocate for our populations and used responsibly to support better decision-making. Core to AAPI Data’s work is the Data-Narrative-Action (DNA) Framework – we believe in (1) rigorous data and research that reflects the true experiences of our communities that inform (2) the narrative that informs how society understands AA and NHPI communities and (3) the actions that policymakers, public administrators, and funders take in service of AA and NHPI communities.

AAPI Data is poised to affect positive change for the AA and NHPI community. Stereotypes and misconceptions have created harmful narratives that oppress and scapegoat AA and NHPI populations. Data and research are critical to informing and educating key decision-makers about AA and NHPI populations. For decades, public agencies and researchers have treated Asian Americans as a monolith and rarely reported data on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Data equity efforts to ensure the visibility of AA and NHPI populations are gaining traction, with significant and ongoing developments at the federal, state, and local levels. Continued efforts are needed. Grounded in data and research, AAPI Data aims to set the table for new conversations and insights.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of AAPI Data, the Director of Policy leads the development and execution of strategies to engage public agencies and policymakers on data equity for AA and NHPI populations. Strong candidates for the role have a strong understanding of how decisions are made in public systems, thrive in roles that involve deep collaboration and partnership with diverse stakeholders across sectors, and have a working knowledge of public data systems and/or a strong commitment to deepening stakeholder understanding and support for data equity. The Director of Policy is expected to bring excellent project management skills, with a track record of managing multiple collaborative projects in a fast-paced environment. Candidates most likely to succeed in this role bring a commitment to equity and inclusion and a relationship-based approach to all they do.

Please Note: This position is fully remote, with a preference for candidates in (or willing to move to) the Washington DC area. Additionally, this is a contract position with an anticipated duration of two years with the possibility of continuation contingent upon funding. Work samples will be requested of all shortlisted candidates.

The full salary range for the AAPI Data Director of Policy is $96,695.28 - $184,098.96 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $170,000 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.”

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a university employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
