    At NASHP, we engage state leaders to solve problems and share best practices, conduct policy analyses and research, leverage state expertise to develop model policies, disseminate information on state policies and programs, and provide technical assistance to states.

    We have an immediate opening for a director of finance and accounting to join our Operations Team.

    Position Overview

    Reporting to the chief operating officer (COO), the director of finance and accounting manages NASHP’s accounting and finance function, prepares the annual operating budget, manages the annual financial and single audit, and supports executive and programmatic decisions by analyzing financial data.

    This is a full-time, exempt position, based in NASHP’s Washington, DC (preferred), or Portland, Maine office. Remote candidates will also be considered.

    Core Competencies and Requirements

    • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred but not required
    • 10 years of nonprofit accounting experience, including at least 2 years at the controller level
    • Solid understanding of 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance
    • Solid understanding of GAAP accounting principles and practices
    • Experience developing and managing organizational operating budgets
    • Significant experience with financial management of federal and foundation grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts
    • Experience with preparing the annual NICRA package for submission and negotiation
    • Ability to learn new accounting systems (Acumatica); ability to implement a new accounting system and manage organizational change
    • Proficiency with all aspects of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
    • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills, attention to detail, and strong analytical skills
    • Ability to balance multiple assignments, working with several policy and program managers
    • Ability to translate technical information to a non-technical audience

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures; protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
    • Oversees accounting operations including general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets, net assets, accruals, cash management, allocations, bank/credit card reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
    • Partners with the COO and policy directors to develop annual operating budget and prepare monthly budget vs. actuals and forecasts/projections
    • Manages annual organizational financial audit, annual single audit, Form 990 preparation, and tax filings as required and appropriate
    • Provides status of financial condition of the organization by collecting, interpreting, and reporting key financial data; prepares board decks and management reports
    • Recommends and implements improvements/updates to NASHP’s business model, chart of accounts, financial policies/procedures, internal controls framework, cost accounting approach, allocations, and indirect pools to optimize compliance and cost recovery
    • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation and regulations, consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports; advises management of actions and potential risks associated with compliance issues
    • Supervises one to three team members and temporary staff

    Working at NASHP

    NASHP offers a flexible work schedule. We are currently operating in a hybrid work arrangement, with two days in the office each week. NASHP has offices in Washington, DC, and in Portland, Maine.

    Salary and Compensation

    The salary for the director of finance and accounting position ranges from $120,000 to $150,000. Your salary will be commensurate with your experience.
