Polysomnographic Technician under the direction of a physician, administers various sleep studies in order to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders. Performs routine patient assessments, scores sleep records, documents other test results, and collects and transmits biological specimens for analysis. Being a Polysomnographic Technician typically requires an associate degree or its equivalent and certification as a Polysomnographic Technician. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Polysomnographic Technician

  • The principal responsibility for this position for which prior experience is required will be performance of overnight polysomnography (six 12-hour overnight shifts additional 8-hours) amounting to 80 hours across a two week pay period within our 2-bed Sleep Diagnostic & Treatment Center at the James J. Peters VAMC, a teaching affiliate of the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, N.Y..

    Salary for this RRT hybrid position is competitive at the Grade 11 level. Although having an RRT degree or equivalent is a prerequisite, the position will focus almost exclusively on performance of polysomnography and potentially other functions pertaining to the operation of the sleep center such as home sleep studies setups, PAP setups, etc. Experience scoring sleep studies is a plus, but not required. Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or equivalent is desired, but not required.

    ```Basic Requirements```

    • Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or its successor.
    • Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
    • Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT.

    For the GS-0601-11 Registered Respiratory Therapist/Polysomnographic Technician, candidates must have the following,

    1. Experience, Licensure and Credential.

    • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.
    • Hold an active license and RRT credential. Upon graduation from an accredited program, RTs are eligible to take a national examination and upon passing, the individual is granted the credential of RRT by the NBRC.

    2. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs:

    • Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
    • Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities.
    • Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management.
