Club Manager, Cambridge Boat Club

Cambridge Boat Club (CBC) is seeking a motivated, self-directed individual to manage a broad scope of operations and to run our clubhouse rental business. Through frequent engagement with club members, club leadership, coaches, and other stakeholders, this person serves a highly visible and important function in the club’s social fabric and helps enhance our strong spirit of community. This is a full-time position averaging 35 hours per week with some variation between seasons. On-site presence is required at least two days per week and occasionally on evenings and weekends; working hours have some flexibility.

About CBC. Considered one of the premier rowing clubs in the United States, CBC is a rowing and social club located in an historic clubhouse on the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge, MA. CBC’s more than 500 members range from current and former Olympic and National Team athletes to recreational rowers and social participants. The club runs a year-round high-performance juniors program and summer learn-to-scull camp, and the clubhouse is also home to the Cambridge Rindge and Latin high school crew. CBC is the founder and sole member of the Head Of The Charles® Regatta, whose offices are on site. We enjoy an active social schedule, hosting events several times each month throughout the year; when we are not making use of the clubhouse, we make it available to rent for private events and parties.

Most of the Club’s activity is led and sustained by volunteer members. In addition to the Club Manager, we employ several part-time staff including a bookkeeper and a coaching team of up to six people. To learn more, see www.cambridge-boat-club.org.

Position Title: Club Manager

Reports to: The Club President

Status: Salaried, Non- Exempt

Hours: This is a full-time, year-round position

Location: Cambridge, MA

About this Position. The Club Manager reports to the Club President and collaborates with various officers, committee chairs, coaches, and other staff in the execution of the Club’s activities. A wide variety of responsibilities and activities calls for and rewards a person interested in participating in and learning about many facets of a large, high-performing rowing organization. Primary responsibilities include:

General administration:

• Collaborate with the Club’s volunteer leadership to oversee all aspects of ongoing operations; take direct responsibility for implementation of some operational functions
• Maintain master calendar
• Maintain club compliance calendar, and execute tasks accordingly
• Support Club Secretary in organizing all-club meetings
• Support members on day-to-day matters including distributing clubhouse key and parking stickers; communicate via the club newsletter and email
• Support Juniors and Learn-to-Scull programs: registration, billing, administration
• Manage vendors and contractors
• Manage contracted cleaning services; order and stock supplies
• Liaise with neighboring organizations on grounds access and projects and parking.

HR/Finance:

• Manage on-boarding process for new employees
• Process and maintain personnel files
• Manage HR policies and handbooks
• Support payroll and finance operations, with Bookkeeper
• Manage compliance with SafeSport policy.

Clubhouse Rentals:

• Marketing, reservations, contracts & billing, and operations.

Special Projects/Events:

• Coordinate CBC’s annual open house, working with other Charles River clubs
• Support and coordinate CBC’s role in “Let’s Row – Cambridge”, with CRI and Cambridge Public Schools
• Support other ad hoc club projects as they arise: e.g. website update, clubhouse renovation project.

Attendance at monthly Board of Directors’ evening meetings is generally expected. An office is provided, and on-site parking is available. The Club Manager is welcome and encouraged to attend club social events (unpaid unless it is required in an employment capacity).

Skills, experience, and attributes. We are seeking a person who can bring these talents to bear at CBC:

• College degree preferred, but not required
• Superb organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage complex schedules and timelines; experience managing operations for small organizations
• Strong computer skills including Excel and Word; competence with basic office technology
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
• Experience in marketing, customer service, and/or office manager roles desirable
• Experience and knowledge of rowing, coaching, and program administration are desirable, but not required.

• Curious with good listening skills; a natural connector of people and ideas
• Strong personal judgment, combined with an ability to take direction in a complex, volunteer-led organization
• Confident and effective in engaging with a wide variety of people, including members of all ages, event planners, caterers, contractors, coaches, and club leadership
• Enthusiasm for participating in the life of the club; interest in participating as a member a plus.

Physical Requirements. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Ability to go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects (e.g. rowing equipment) as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
• Ability to lift and transport a minimum of 50 lbs without assistance.
• Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.

Compensation, etc. Pay range is $55,000-60,000 annually, commensurate with experience, with an additional bonus opportunity of up to 10%. In addition to 8 paid holidays and 5 days of sick leave, we offer up to 4 paid weeks of vacation, timing subject to approval.
