  • Overview:
    We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Plant Engineer to join our team. As a Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, construction, and maintenance of our plant systems and equipment. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient operations and drive continuous improvement.

    Under supervision of the Power Plant Engineer and general direction of City Administration, this position performs skilled and supervisory work in operation and maintenance of an electric power generation plant. Assists Power Plant Engineer in planning, coordination and reviewing work of subordinate personnel.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supervises and participates with technical subordinates in the maintenance and operation of diesel engines, generators, centrifugal pumps, motors, and related plant equipment and components.
    • Watches instruments and meters to see that production and voltages are maintained in accordance with instructions and that such instruments are functioning properly.
    • Starts and shuts down generators as necessary to fulfill load requirements.
    • Reads operating metering devices.
    • As directed, schedules purchase of power.
    • Records readings in plant log.
    • Keeps watch on ties from other sources of power.
    • Investigates equipment breakdowns and attempts to put equipment back into service as quickly as possible.
    • Schedules and participates in making repairs to plant equipment and buildings.
    • Makes periodic inspections of equipment throughout plant to see that it is functioning properly.
    • Changes charts and recording meters.
    • Inspects and maintains fuel levels and storage tanks.
    • Sees that painting of equipment tanks, cooling towers and related equipment is accomplished.
    • Prepares time schedules and timecards.
    • Performs related work as required.
    • Interacts with the public, other employees, and supervisors in a polite, calm and professional manner.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Extensive knowledge of procedures and techniques essential to operation of diesel powered electrical generating equipment.
    • Considerable knowledge of hazards, operation, adjustment of recording and metering devices common to electric power plants.
    • Knowledge of the principles of supervision.
    • Skill in the use and adjustment of appropriate electrical and mechanical equipment.
    • Ability to analyze working conditions of equipment to detect flaws or defects in operation and to take appropriate steps to correct defective equipment or hazardous working conditions.
    • Lay out and supervise work of subordinate personnel.
    • Read and interpret measuring and testing devices connected with plant operation.
    • Keep proper logs/records of observations.
    • React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
    • Maintain confidentiality of employee personnel information.
    • Prepare/present reports both orally and in writing
    • Communicate effectively with co-workers, trainees, the public and all supervisory personnel.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

    Any combination of training and experience that will provide the incumbent with required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the assigned work. At least five (5) years of progressively responsible work in power plant maintenance work (and as working leader, if possible) is desirable.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work performed by this position occurs primarily indoors. Some danger of explosion is present in some of the tasks to be performed (or supervised). The normal work week is 40 hours. However, this position is subject to emergency responses and/or extended day work requirement.
