WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR
Schwartz WWTP
Performs various degrees of work including intermediate to advanced technical work in the operation & maintenance of various wastewater treatment plants, equipment and piping; laboratory analysis; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Makes regular tours of plant & equipment to monitor, evaluate and adjust plant operations for optimal performance; Records and analyzes readings from instruments and laboratory results;
Checks proper functioning of equipment;
Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves, chemical feed equipment and other apparatuses to meet changing operating conditions;
Pumps sludge, drains tanks and changes clarifiers as needed;
Cleans and services pumps, motors, screens and other equipment;
Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to all plant equipment as needed;
Greases bearings, replaces filters and performs related equipment maintenance tasks;
Cleans structures, buildings, contact chambers, digesters and lagoons;
Mows grass; sprays weed killer;
Calibrates dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorine meters;
Works varying hours and shifts as needed. May work 12 hours per day/night on a 7-day on and 7-day off rotating shift (shifts will cover every other weekend and some holidays as scheduled);
Secures plant site after normal working hours;
Collects samples and performs regulatory and process control laboratory analyses such as BOD, TSS, Ammonia, Coliforms, Chlorine Residual, pH, O2 uptake, settleometer, microscopic examination and other compliance and process testing to ensure proper treatment techniques;
Enters data on computer, spreadsheets, emails and calendars;
Performs tasks related to all GSWSA functions as required.
General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical, biological and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of laboratory operations, equipment & procedures; general knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; general knowledge of computers, Microsoft Word and Excel programs and emails; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read and understand O&M manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and operator training texts and obtain the highest level of operator certification; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain various types of records; ability to write legibly; ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds; ability to bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders and stairs, twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED.
