Power Plant Maintenance Supervisor

  • Duties

    • Plan, direct, and oversee the daily maintenance of a large complex multi-purpose power project that includes hydroelectric power plant, high voltage switchyard, and dam with controlled spillway.
    • Direct the maintenance of the project in accordance with applicable statutory requirements and agreements exercising on-site responsibility for maintenance of assigned projects.
    • Diagnose equipment problems and personally directs power plant personnel on the installation, overhauling, and testing of major electrical and mechanical equipment.
    • Direct power plant personnel in major repairs to return equipment to service to avoid impacting power sales contract and incurring financial penalties for failure to deliver power as scheduled.
    • Supervise power plant, mechanics, maintenance workers and administrative personnel. Establish performance objectives, rates performance, and recommends discipline.
    • Coordinate maintenance activities of power plant personnel with other local management, district, contractors, etc., all of which must work together to accomplish project operations and maintenance activities.
    • Evaluate and interview candidates and makes recommendation for selection.
    • Coordinate working condition changes with local labor union representative.
    • Direct normal and corrective maintenance activities to reliably deliver electric power, control power system voltage, control power system frequency, and control switchyard equipment as a part of the southeast region power system.
    • Direct the control of water elevations and flows in the reservoir and river, in accordance with PMA and Water Management supplied schedules.
    • Direct operations during emergencies, including equipment failures, power system emergencies (black-outs, brown-outs, frequency and voltage disturbance or complete power system collapse) and other emergencies.
    • Monitor changing reservoir conditions during floods in order to correctly direct regulation of water levels.
    • Develop methods and techniques to accomplish effective operations within established policies and procedures; recommends policy changes to meet critical problems encountered during progress of power production operations, and maintenance programs.
    • Participate in the planning and development of overall hydropower program by recommending policy changes, maintenance standards, O and M procedures, cost reductions, and personnel management.
    • Reschedule maintenance activities and reassigns work forces as maintenance priorities change due to unpredictable events such as equipment breakdowns, floods, or externally imposed schedule changes which affects equipment availability.
    • Participate in the planning and administration of both long and short-range programs relative to major maintenance problems on hydroelectric powerplant, dam and related equipment.
    • Provide step by step guidance on how to handle equipment and power failures to ensure continuity of functions of the power plant.
    • Administers a safety program that covers several high hazard areas such as high voltage electricity, noise, large rotating machinery, respiratory hazards, fall hazards, and drowning hazards.
    • Conduct all work in strict compliance with the Corps' Hazardous Energy Control Procedures.

    There is no specific length of training or experience required.     Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to lead or supervise as a Power Plant Maintenance Supervisor . I have the ability to lead or supervise common power plant maintenance duties. I have the potential ability to assign work to plan the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a day-to-day or project-by-project basis. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in-progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.

    • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work tasks require that the incumbent be capable of rapid simultaneous mental and muscular coordination in conjunction with eye and hand coordination to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications. In order to perform the maintenance, inspection and operation of power station equipment the incumbent may lift and carry heavy objects, climb and reach above the shoulders, stand, sit, crawl and kneel for prolonged periods of time and performs repeated bending.
    • WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent will work primarily inside around machinery in operation; in close proximity to high and low voltage circuits and climbs stairs frequently. Sometimes work will be performed outside in weather of varying degree of temperature and humidity, in tight or cramped work spaces, on ladders or scaffolds and on slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Occasionally the incumbent will use solvents or de-greasing agents, be assigned to protracted or irregular hours of work, use both hands in water and be exposed to silica, asbestos, oil, grease, excessive noise, vibration, smoke and gas fumes. Personal protective safety devices will be supplied to the worker when in an area of hazardous exposure. Examples of devices are hard hats, safety shoes, safety goggles and glasses, fresh air breathing masks, gloves, dust and smoke respirators, ear muffs, insulated gloves and safety grounds. When in an area of hazardous exposure, the incumbent will wear the appropriate personal safety device.
