Power Plant Shift Operator TC-J - Direct Hire

  • Duties

    • Operate hydroelectric powerhouse with 2 generating units.
    • Operate locally controlled units, and adjunct operating facilities such as a fish facilities, spillways, locally controlled powerhouses, regulating outlets, remote flood control structures and related equipment.
    • During other than day shifts, and on weekends and holidays, will be the senior employee at the project and serve as the Project Manager's representative.
    • The principal duty station is the project control room where the communication systems are located. From this command center, operate, control, coordinate and direct the operation of the project.
    • Routinely make or direct inspections to insure that established operating procedures are being followed and also to make first-hand evaluation of emergency situations which arise.
    • Perform and direct work in accordance with current work practices and assume responsibilities for completion of work tasks in a manner which will insure safety of self, others and equipment.
    • Monitor and control power generation, water control, and auxiliary equipment and systems.
    • Perform gate position and generation computations to maintain river flows in coordination with a District reservoir regulator.
    • In emergencies, exercise judgment and take immediate action to minimize risk to people, equipment, and downstream interests.
    • Authorize, issue, and release safe clearances under the hazardous energy control program.
    • Maintain an official log of events.
    • Prepare project operational reports.
    • Inspect equipment and initiate trouble reports.
    • Maintain security surveillance of the project.

    Requirements

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening, and random testing thereafter.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment occupational physical examination, and annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued required level of physical health, fitness, and ability to perform the duties.
    • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
    • This position requires moderate to heavy lifting of up to 45 pounds.
    • This position requires a valid state driver's license.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Power Plant Shift Operator TC-J - Direct Hire~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common Power Plant Shift Operator tasks in a power producing plant of about 40 megawatt generation capacity; take sole command of normal and abnormal power plant operation problems to execute a desirable solution such as a recovery from a power blackout in the plant; work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    • Physical Requirements: Eye and hand coordination required to operate switches and controls. Job requires extensive walking, standing, and climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs. Is required to operate large valves, apply servolocks, lift deck hatches and other jobs requiring pulling or turning force. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies frequently up to, and occasionally over 45 pounds. Work requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, and kneeling.
    • Working Conditions: Works on a rotating shift, inside, in well-lighted, work areas. Works outdoors for short periods with exposure to climate extremes. Occasionally works in proximity to high voltages and currents. Incumbent is often exposed to equipment and machinery noises, and is subject to the discomfort of wearing safety equipment such as hard-hats, ear plugs, and respirators. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
