    Job Summary:

    The Combustion Turbine Specialist under general directive supervision, works with a crew of employees in operation, maintenance, supports overhaul and repair of combustion turbines and all auxiliary associated equipment.


    Job Functions:

    • Responsible for compliance with current Company safety rules and procedures including operating practices, safety procedures, and all regulatory requirements. Conducts and/or adheres to pre-job briefings for each task.
    • Performs the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of combustion turbines, generators or other equipment as assigned; and as necessary, performs the operation by manual control in case of failure to automatic controls.
    • Provide operational support as the Control Room Operator (CRO) or Outside Operator as required.
    • Observes and records readings of required indicators and/or instruments, for safe operation within prescribed limits.
    • Continuously observes equipment operating conditions.
    • Periodically records and reports meter readings on generating units and transmission circuits, trouble indications or other abnormal conditions affecting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of station equipment to the Plant Manager, Plant Dispatcher, coworkers; and otherwise as may be directed by station management.
    • Cooperating with other personnel on various tests.
    • Installs, adjusts, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, programmer logic controller (PLC), instrumentation, equipment and circuitry associated with the Station.
    • Performs all types of tests, calibrations and repairs to instrumentation, test apparatus and laboratory equipment. This includes all equipment associated with environmental protection and monitoring.
    • Participates in scheduled regulatory certification tests and in the preparation of the required data reports.
    • Adheres to all environmental requirements.
    • Troubleshoots, repairs, installs, tests, aligns and balances: motors, generators, rotating equipment, rectifiers, batteries, transformers, regulators, reactors, circuit breakers, disconnecting switches, instruments, control relays, communication equipment, lightning arrestors and other equipment with control apparatus in the generating station, associated substation, and facility.
    • Operates various testing equipment and instruments.
    • Performs any mechanical maintenance, installation and repair on station equipment, structures and buildings.
    • Performs pipe fitting, pipe covering, insulation, incidental machining, non-code welding, brazing, flame and arc cutting.
    • Operates plant equipment needed to perform job duties including vehicles, cranes, hoists, etc.
    • Initiates and performs the Lock Out / Tag Out procedure, in clearing, tagging and removing equipment from service for inspection and maintenance work, or assigning emergency switching and tagging occasioned by system or plant requirements; restoring or directing the restoration of equipment, ensuring that equipment or operation conditions are returned to normal, and reporting these operations to the Plant Manager, coworkers and Plant Dispatcher, as required.
    • Work in collaboration with others assigned to assist as well as sharing knowledge and experience in all aspects of unit operation, auxiliary operation, and repairs.
    • Set up and inspect rigging.
    • Operates and maintains water treatment equipment.
    • Performs any task assigned for continuity or restoration of service in an emergency.
    • Required to be “on call” and to carry a cellular telephone, pager and/or other device as necessary for notification and to report in a timely manner.
    • Performs routine clerical work including station logs (such as maintenance repairs and outage logs), time reports, material requisitions, etc.
    • Works as part of a crew.
    • May, at certain times, be required to report to other locations for work.
    • Maintain equipment and work areas in a neat, clean and safe manner.
    • Reads and interprets complex blueprints, wiring and schematic diagrams, as required to perform both internal and external switching and tagging (mechanical and electrical).
    • Performing other work, as assigned.
    • Be ready to adapt and respond to situations that impact safety, regulatory compliance or operational performance.

    Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

    • Must possess at least a two-year (associate) college technical degree or equivalent OR 6 years industry applicable experience (power plant experience preferable) OR 6 years as a journeyman in a certified program (electrician, millwright, pipe fitter, boilermaker), or completion of appropriate level of studies in a military technical school (e.g., nuclear propulsion).
    • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of control room experience in power generation facilities, process plants or equivalent military experience. Additional experience with machinery repair and control systems preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

    • Must possess basic math skills, good verbal communications skills, and be proficient with the use of power and precision tools.
    • Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts in this work and have the ability to work without direct supervision.
    • Must have a working knowledge of electrical and combustion equipment and demonstrated ability in the operation, maintenance and repair of combustion turbine/generators or the equivalent.
    • Must demonstrate through testing and documentation, knowledge and experience previously acquired, of solid-state electronics and complex wiring and schematic diagrams (electrical and mechanical).
    • Must possess working knowledge of various shop tools and equipment; may be required to perform basic arc welding and gas burning.
    • Must be able to perform operations of considerable complexity and variety and have an understanding of technical problems, under general supervision.
    • Must possess a high degree of analytical ability and independent judgement. Must be able to interpret and work from complex drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
    • Must be able to work with highly complex and varying issues at all times - requiring diversified skills and frequent intra-Company contacts.
    • Must be willing to receive instructions, communicate effectively, and cooperate with fellow employees in the completion of operations and maintenance assignments.
    • Must be willing to work overtime, multiple shifts, and weekends.
    • Must be familiar with the Company’s safety rules applicable to this and related jobs.
    • Must understand and follow the Company’s lockout/tagout rules.
    • Must be able to perform alignment and balancing of mechanical and electrical equipment.
    • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills to organize and present ideas, reports, and analyses effectively.

    Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

    • Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.
    • Requires working rotating 12 hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.
    • Includes working indoors and outdoors.
