Your Opportunity
The Grain / Ingredient Supervisor oversees receiving of grain and ingredients to the Algona feed mill. Effectively maintains positive interaction and communication with procurement team, grain team, feed mill team, grain customers, ingredient suppliers, and ingredient haulers.
Accurately enters information into mill computer systems, maintains accurate documentation and correspondence for regulatory compliance, effective customer service and help ensure we have the proper level of grain and ingredients on hand to meet feed production demands.
Supervises receiving operations at the Algona feed mill, including grain piling, grain retrieval, grain drying, soybean operations, bin rotation, transfer of grain, maintaining straight wall building, communicating ingredient needs to purchasing team, monitor ingredient and grain levels, and daily ingredient reconciliation.
SALARY RANGE : $46,500 - $68,200
Core Responsibilities
- Oversee grain piling, hiring and training seasonal help, deployment of the tarp, coordination of filling and closure of the grain pile, monitoring inventory of the grain pile, monitoring fan status, lining up generator, monitoring moisture of grain pile, snow removal around grain pile, purchasing tarps, skirts, and other necessary items
- Oversee grain retrieval, scheduling contractor, monitoring retrieved inventory, disposal of discarded corn, disposal of tarping and skirting, cleaning of grain tower, cleanup of spilled grain, storing 2x4s, ensuring weeds are sprayed
- Oversee soybean operations, ensures all equipment is in place, inspected, maintained, and operational in time for harvest, monitors inventory of soybean bins, monitors condition of soybeans throughout the year, operates fan systems to ensure soybean stay in condition, identifies equipment repair needs, unloads soybeans, ensures soybean bins and surrounding area are clean at end of season, store equipment when not in use
- Oversee grain drying activities, trains employees how to run the grain dryer, monitors wet corn inventory and operates dryer at proper times, works with maintenance team on dryer upkeep, schedules contractors to inspect dryer annually, ensures wet bins are properly cleaned and kept up, ensure area remains clean.
- Oversee grain blending activities, determines correct time to blend vs dry corn and directs staff accordingly.
- Schedule clean out of concrete silos and bins annually
- Communicate corn inventory to grain buyer to ensure adequate supply
- Communicate ingredient needs to purchasing team to ensure adequate supply
- Oversee inventory, proper storage, and housekeeping of ingredient storage areas
- Performs tasks in areas which have grain dust, ingredients dust, or other potential allergens present
- Follows all safety and laboratory policies
- Complete daily ingredient and feed reconciliations
- Investigates and resolves ingredient discrepancies at month end before submitting report
- Forecast ingredient needs based upon current formulas or projected new formulations
- Order ingredients that are needed to maintain inventories
- Communicates ingredient delivery concerns with ingredient and grain procurement teams
- Monitor quality of inbound grain and ingredients, rejecting loads when necessary
- Maintain positive and effective communication with feed mill, grain, office, and maintenance staff
- Completes daily duties in a manner that maintains compliance and seeks out opportunities for improvement within the Smithfield ISO22000 Feed Safety and Quality program
- Operates fork truck and skid loader as necessary
- Completes daily duties in a manner that maintains compliance and seeks out opportunities for improvement withing the Smithfield ISO 22000 Feed Safety and Quality Program
- Must understand that Smithfield HPD is a producer of high-quality pork for human consumption.
- Comply with all Management System compliance- to include but not limited to SIPS (Smithfield Injury Prevention System) : EMS (Emergency Management Systems) and Animal Well Being Policies and Procedures

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Business, Agriculture, or related field, and 2 years of relevant experience;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Order processing systems, understanding of email and knowledge of spreadsheets.
- Current and valid driver's license with acceptable MVR
- Ability to effectively communicate in one on one situations, within small groups (ability to present information), across departments, including up the chain of command.
- Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly supervises 1-3 full time employees and multiple seasonal employees in the grain and ingredient receiving area.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance;
rewarding employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely manner utilizing the disciplinary process.
