Precision Grinder operates precision grinding machines to assemble products and product parts to established blueprint and engineering specifications. Selects, mounts, attaches and calibrates a variety of attachments and grinding machines for grinding angles, contours, lines, and spheres on to surfaces. Being a Precision Grinder requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a manager. The Precision Grinder works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. Sets up and operates one or more grinding machines to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces of metal work pieces to blueprint specifications. Applies grinding procedures to surfaces of metal following tooling instructions and standard charts. Files grooved, contoured and irregular surfaces of metal objects, such as metal working dies and machine parts to conform to templates or other parts/layouts. Grinds, sands and polishes objects or parts to correct defects or prepares surfaces for further finishing. Operates hand held grinder and orbital sander correctly; Working knowledge of the difference between grinding, PSA and scotchbrite disc and how to use each type correctly; Ability to read blueprints/job order for product specifications; Ability to operate all aspects of the grinding machine; Ability to lift and position work piece manually or with hoist.
Reads blueprint and job order for product specifications, such as dimensions, tolerances & number of parts to be ground and tooling instructions. (Read prints as it relates to grind symbols, grain direction and finish grit - grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures and grinding wheels to be used)
Scan jobs in and out correctly. Log, scan and identify parts prior to leaving Grinding Cell.
Measure and mark equipment, objects or parts to ensure grinding and polishing standards are met
Performs inspection and give instruction concerning the grinding process and prints to others
