Principal Architect oversees and manages a team responsible for architectural projects. Reviews and approves architectural procedures and techniques used to complete projects. Being an Principal Architect has a diverse knowledge of architecture principles and practices, uses advanced techniques, and has responsibility for final specifications, approval of ordered materials, and overall guidance on objectives and concepts. Ensures architectural designs are completed on time and adhere to the established specifications and standards. Additionally, Principal Architect keeps up to date on the development of new architectural methods or techniques. Requires a bachelor's degree in architecture. Requires a State Architect's License. Typically reports to a director. The Principal Architect typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be an Principal Architect typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     How you’ll make an impact:

    As a Senior Principal Software Architect, you will architect complete end-to-end solutions for automotive IP and satellite features for SiriusXM family of services, for use in Automotive, Marine and Aviation systems. Rally and lead cross organizational efforts to implement solutions. Foster clear communications and accountability within and between teams and enable the teams to overcome obstacles. Be the champion of each feature and of execution excellence in achieving it. Be the bridge between executive management and technical implementation. 

    What you’ll do:

    • Architect complete end-to-end solutions for connected vehicles across infrastructure and application server and client components.

    • Drive and facilitate entire engineering process from concept through release to create new features in an agile process. 

    • Guide feature ideation, conceptual design, and user story creation to support an attainable and efficient design that follows best engineering practices and makes efficient use of resources. 

    • Identify core challenges and decisions and determine approaches and strategies to handle them. 

    • Lead discussions to determine approaches, risks, and costs utilizing a diverse set of perspectives. 

    • Identify and document engineering requirements. 

    • Identify participants and stakeholders in the engineering effort across the company. 

    • Lead the team in creating and refining an optimal design and implementation path, to produce the highest quality feature while making the best use of resources. 

    • Write code and mentor team as necessary to illustrate architectural concepts.

    • Lead the team in creating increasingly refined work and cost estimates through the decision making and implementation process. 

    • Identify and design top level interactions between components:

      • Set functional requirements for each component within the overall design. 

      • Set requirements for contracts between components. 

      • Lead top level and facilitate detailed contract design. 

    • Resolve encountered design issues over the entire process from conceptual design through implementation and release. 

    • Create top level tickets defining the work required from all participants:

      • Identify each component’s required function within the feature. 

      • Identify each component’s requirements to meet overall system and feature requirements and to enable successful implementation of other components. 

    • Support the development and integration of all feature components:

      • Participate in detailed designs. 

      • Diagnose and resolve escalated issues. 

      • Find gaps and improvements in current Architectures.

    • Participate in QA Design:

      • Identify top level feature QA tests that aren’t obvious at the component level. 

      • Review and approve all component and end to end feature QA tests. 

    • Review and approve all component documentation. 

    • Present projects to executive management and the product board at each feature gate with data and rationales for strategic decision making:

      • Feature summary and feasibility notes at Gate 1.

      • Feature effort, cost and objective value estimates at Gate 2. 

      • Identify and present any critical changes in status, risks, costs, achievable value or other significant impacts to projects as they proceed through implementation and launch. 

    • Identify and pursue new ideas for features, processes, strategies, or technologies and present same to the organization for further investigation. 

    What you’ll need:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering.

    • 10-20 years’ experience, primarily in software development projects. 

    • Experience in a variety of programming languages/frameworks across the stack

    • 5 years’ experience in designing end user services in one or more of these areas: 

      • Financial (Subscription, billing and payment systems)

      • Data/Information 

      • Content, especially audio or video

      • Web

      • Mobile Services (Android, iOS) 

    • 5 years with architectural responsibilities in a primarily software engineering project. 

    • Provide technical leadership for a unique diverse matrixed organization for each feature. 

    • Drive the feature team to solve technical and schedule problems in cooperation with the feature owner. 

    • Communicate, evangelize, and foster participation with team members across multiple organizations, especially for larger, higher priority and bolder projects. 

    • Recommend technical, process, and organizational approaches and changes to improve culture, features, technology and implementation across all engineering. 

    • Foster collaboration and a free and open flow of information across all organizations. 

    • Position includes no direct reports. 

    • Working knowledge of:

      • Secure architecture practice

      • Diverse platforms and programming languages

      • IP technology and protocols 

      • Mobile app development

      • Cloud technology and server development 

      • Modern software development and QA tools 

      • Log analysis tools 

    • Jira, Confluence.

    • Technical leadership skills. 

    • Drive to take initiative and to follow through on projects.

    • Servant leadership skills: 

      • Ability to bring a diverse technical organization to agreement while considering all relevant inputs. 

      • Ability to lead and support matrixed organizations to meet a common goal. 

      • Ability to encourage and support deep team initiative to solve problems independently and follow through to reach the goal.

    • Good public speaking and presentation skills.  

    • Interpersonal skills and ability to interact and work with staff at all levels.  

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

    • Experience with Automotive Development Life Cycles a plus.

    • Experience with embedded architectures and resource constrained systems.

    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.  

    • Ability to pay attention to details and be organized.  

    • Ability to project professionalism over the phone and in person.  

    • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.  

    • Commitment to “internal client” and customer service principles.  

    • Creative writing ability.  

    • Time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task, and work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  

    • Must have legal right to work in the U.S.
