Principal Architect oversees and manages a team responsible for architectural projects. Reviews and approves architectural procedures and techniques used to complete projects. Ensures architectural designs are completed on time and adhere to the established specifications and standards. Additionally, Principal Architect keeps up to date on the development of new architectural methods or techniques. Requires a bachelor's degree in architecture. Requires a State Architect's License. Typically reports to a director. The Principal Architect typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be an Principal Architect typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Overview

    A Principal Data Platform Architect provides strategic vision and leadership in the overall design of our enterprise data platform. This role will report to the Chief Data Officer and this highly consequential role will be responsible for executing our data strategy by way of the development and implementation of an enterprise data architecture that is in line with business processes.

     

    The Principal Data Platform Architect will focus on the design and architecture of an enterprise data platform that enables the processing, governance, and utilization of clinical and operational data assets to drive the execution of analytical endeavors across all of Children’s Mercy. The architecture of our Data Platform includes, but is not limited to, ingestion, environment configuration, data modeling, and the enablement of advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities.

     

    Through collaboration and partnership with other Data and Technology leaders and team members, the Principal Data Platform Architect will serve as an expert in the translation of business strategy into technology-based solutions. This role will be called upon to engage with hospital leadership to evangelize the overall vision for data at CMH, enabling an informed adherence to our data & technology strategy in the never-ending pursuit of data-driven insights and solutions.

    Responsibilities

    Define the technical strategy for the enterprise data platform:

    • Collaborate with technology and functional leaders to understand structural requirements and define standards for how data will be stored, consumed, integrated, and managed across the organization; and then translate into a usable blueprint
    • Provide leadership and occasional hands-on technical support to determine complex system setup and requirements
    • Collaborate with governance functions, enterprise architects, and business analysts to understand the implications of system and information architectures
    • Devise and articulate the information architecture and information management strategy for the organization to maximize the value of information assets via their creation, access, and use
    • Identify data sources, both internal and external, and develop a plan for data management that is aligned with organizational data strategy
    • Create a vision for how data will flow through the organization

     

    Provide explicit and conceptual guidance to engineers, architects, and analysts to drive the design and development of our enterprise data platform:

    • Maintain deep knowledge of the full life cycle of data and analytic design, production, deployment, and improvement
    • Optimizing overall data/information flow by reducing redundancy and enabling accessibility within security boundaries.
    • Contribute to solving unique challenges that have a broad impact on the organization
    • Conduct research to determine road maps and trends that impact Children’s Mercy
    • Provide direction for the buy, build, host decision process for related technologies such as data lakes, data warehouses, data models, and other related solutions
    • Provide consultation to other key technologists and leaders on emerging architectures and patterns, such as cloud/hybrid, edge computing, Internet of Things, AI, graph databases and other adjacent disciplines

    Provide continual oversight and guidance for our Data Platform strategy, based on the continual refinement of industry standards and best practice:

    • Influence how we allocate resources to execute projects with notable risk and complexity, developing the strategy for project execution
    • Responsible for conducting/overseeing technology reviews ensuring effectiveness and stability
    • Recognized within and outside of the organization as an industry expert
    • Proactive strategic thinker who anticipates industry trends

     

    Qualifications

    Master's Degree preferred, plus below experience 

     

    Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Information Systems, Statistics, Computer Science, or other relevant education plus 12 years' related leadership experience:

    • 10 years' experience ETL/ELT/Python programming skills including experience with pipeline orchestration tools, logging, monitoring & alerting, troubleshooting, and automated testing & deployments (CI/CD)
    • 10 years' experience working in all phases of the lifecycle of data analytics development: requirements, architecture, design, testing, and deployment

     

    Remote Work/Work from Home

    This position is entirely remote or work-from-home. The person hired should live in the Kansas City metro area and may attend on-site meetings, as scheduled.
