Principal Architect oversees and manages a team responsible for architectural projects. Reviews and approves architectural procedures and techniques used to complete projects. Being an Principal Architect has a diverse knowledge of architecture principles and practices, uses advanced techniques, and has responsibility for final specifications, approval of ordered materials, and overall guidance on objectives and concepts. Ensures architectural designs are completed on time and adhere to the established specifications and standards. Additionally, Principal Architect keeps up to date on the development of new architectural methods or techniques. Requires a bachelor's degree in architecture. Requires a State Architect's License. Typically reports to a director. The Principal Architect typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be an Principal Architect typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Job Description

    Position Summary:  The Architect assists the Project Manager/Project Architect in the production of the construction documents.  The Architect is the secondary contact with the engineering consultants. 

    Position Reporting Structure:

    • Project Manager, Studio Manager or Partner
    • Project Manager and Partner conduct annual reviews

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • May supervise the work of Team Designers and Interns
    • May provide mentoring to Designers and Interns within the studio

    Essential Functions (not in any specific order).  Other duties may be assigned.

    • Produce construction documents
    • Coordinate with the engineering consultants
    • Maintain the quality control of the drawings and specifications
    • Process and coordinate the in-office construction phase of projects including shop drawings, RFP’s and RFI’s
    • Prepare written communication to clients and contractors
    • Research on codes and materials
    • Participate in shop drawing reviews
    • May provide construction observation for certain projects
    • Construction document production and coordination     (40%)
    • Construction administration       (40%)
    • Code and material research      (10%)
    • Design meetings                        (10%)

     

    Competencies:  Customer focus, flexibility, communication, initiative, interpersonal effectiveness, technical and professional knowledge, problem analysis and problem solving, demonstration of branding philosophy.

     

    Work Environment

    • Performed primarily in an office environment including client visits.
    • PC work majority of  the day 
    • May be exposed to construction sites
    • Work hours may vary above 40 hours per week depending upon workload and project deadlines, attending community meetings, etc,
    • Occasional lifting, carrying drawings of various weights

    Career Path:

    • Move into next level of Project Architect
      • Minimum of three years in the position of Architect
      • Obtain experience working with AIA forms and contracts
      • Acquire code experience and application proficiency
      • Acquire skills in problem solving and negotiations

    • Licensed Architect in Wisconsin
    • Code knowledge
    • Revit proficiency
    • PC skills with industry accepted software
    • Ability to travel between the office and client/job sites on a regular basis
