    GENERAL SUMMARY:
    The Color Designer will support the GEON Performance Solutions R&D group with the primary focus in the Avon Lake Color Lab. This candidate will report directly to the Senior Scientist – Color Technology for Geon Performance Solutions. Performing the function with minimal supervision, the Color Designer is responsible for developing new formulas for custom colors, which meet the requirements of customers and adhere to company standards related to quality, price and performance. This individual must have strong color knowledge.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Performs work in accordance with good safety practices. Work with high degree of safety awareness. Must wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment.)
    Ensure that all paperwork and standards are correct prior to starting matches.
    Support the plants, customers, vinyl solution center, sales team and customer service as needed.
    Focus on the entire process including- blending, compounding and secondary steps in conversion including injection molding.
    Develop new formulas for color samples, which meet the requirements of customers. Must demonstrate precision in color matching, optimizing loading level and minimizing raw material costs.
    Ability to develop/implement new techniques and methods to continuously improve color matching, blending, compounding and quality.
    Must be able to document processing data and to clearly communicate back to Technical Manager. Information will be critical to scale-up and plant support for commercial orders.
    Complete experiments and record data and observations on pigments and additives.
    Utilizes automated systems and technology (SAP, PC, Color Computer, LIMS software, etc.) to develop, diagnose and/or improve processes and resolve customer issues.
    Complete hand-outs, color chips and samples for customers. This may include larger projects like marketing hand-outs (chip booklets.)
    Must be able to manage time effectively, work with minimal supervision and work over as necessary to complete projects.
    Must understand the rigor and importance of good housing keeping and hygiene for FDA and medical applications.
    Minimal travel may be required to support plant and customer needs.
    Will be responsible for handling, loading, unloading hazardous materials and preparing hazardous materials for shipment. Will be required to undergo annual training related to hazardous material handling.
    Attends and participates in training opportunities and seminars relevant to the position.
    Must be receptive and flexible to receiving other projects/duties as assigned or needed.
    Ability to perform special effect/metallic color matches is a plus.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    High School degree required. Post secondary technical training is a plus. Ideal candidate will also have formal color training.
    Must have strong color matching experience (minimum of three years of color matching).
    Knowledge of PVC and PP compounds is considered a plus.
    Must be able to function in a team-oriented environment and have good interpersonal skills.
    Ability to complete multiple projects with deadlines.
    Good mechanical skills.
    Must be familiar with MS Excel and MS Word software.
    Ability/knowledge of the set-up and operation of basic polymer processing equipment is preferred: Henschel mixer, two roll mills, compression molding, injection molding machine.
    Good attendance record is required.
    Must be able to read and understand MSDS sheets and processing guides for a variety of raw materials
    Must be able to work overtime as required.

Occasionally required to sit. The individual must frequently lift and/or move 55 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and the ability to differentiate color.

The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.
