Interprets equipment diagnostics, troubleshoots breakdowns, and makes necessary adjustments to complete the job.     POSITION TITLE: Printing Press Operator

    REPORTS TO: Manufacturing Manager

    LOCATION: Springfield, OH

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Operates a printing press by ensuring that proper materials, inks and measurements according to customer specifications are used. Maintains proper measurements and ink colors while machines are operating.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Conduct changeovers of presses by cleaning ink pot trays, plates, rollers and cylinders.
    • Mount plates in proper locations and commences printing.
    • Monitor quality when machine is running by checking ink viscosities, print clarity, treatment level and adhesion of presses.
    • Maintain proper production records of presses.
    • Ensure that rolls on lumber wrap press are removed at required lengths, bundled and strapped, and properly identified and tagged with all pertinent information.
    • Fill out production tags and labels.
    • Help load and remove rolls on presses.
    • Remove shafts and put them into new rolls to put on machine.
    • Remove shafts from finished rolls and puts on new cores and reload.
    • Back out stations, removes caps and gears from cylinders, remove cylinders from press and reinstall different ones on press.
    • Load cylinders into rack and remove them on press and mixes ink, following prescribed formulas, from a base system.
    • Examples of challenges that the incumbents must solve include determining the causes of messy or missing print, wrinkles in the print or input rolls and how to put rolls on with damaged cores.
    • Planning and organizing activities include determining the level of supplies required (i.e. ink, cores and fabric), and determining how many output rolls of what size are required per input roll.
    • Decision making without supervision including when determining if the colors are right, when operating the press, when conducting general work activities
    • Work independently after receiving job assignments from the supervisor.
    • Must continuously wear safety glasses, safety boots/shoes, hearing protection, and hand protection to avoid a work injury.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • A high school diploma is required to ensure ability to read plant orders and instructions/safety features of equipment and tools and to understand the process conditions of the product.
    • Approximately 7 to 12 months of on-the-job learning time is required to learn the different components of the job and to be able to determine why print does not look right and how to resolve the situation.

    PHYSICAL, AUDITORY, DEXTERITY AND VISUAL DEMANDS

    Physical Exertion: 100% of the day, i.e. when standing (60%), sitting and walking (20%), bending and crouching (10%) while conducting work activities; when lifting (5%) buckets of solvent that weigh more than 25lbs; and pushing/pulling (10%) rolls of printed fabric on carts weighing more than 25lbs; and when climbing (5%) ladders.

    Auditory Concentration: Not applicable

    Dexterity Requirements: 80% of the day; i.e., when using small hand tools, writing, cutting and filing.

    Visual Concentration: 75% of the day; i.e. when conducting product and equipment inspections, monitoring dials, color matching and reading plant orders and plates.
