Privacy Director directs and develops the organization's privacy strategy, including policies, procedures, and initiatives. Ensures all business and data management processes reflect privacy requirements and comply with laws and regulations. Being a Privacy Director incorporates regulatory changes into the organization's processes. Plans and directs privacy training programs and communications. Additionally, Privacy Director ensures that compliance monitoring, auditing, and remediation are effective. Leads research and prepares communications in response to privacy-related events or consumer, government, or media inquiries. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Privacy Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Privacy Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Position Summary

    We are currently recruiting for a Privary Counsel to join our team to work remotely in Canada.

     

    The successful candidates will provide legal counsel related to global privacy and data protection matters, researches and prepares opinions on legal questions, documents and reports, reviews contracts related to processing of personal data, assists with privacy program management.

    Responsibilities

    • Reviews various documents, materials, events, activities, and problems with and from various business units to identify potential privacy / data protection issues and makes oral and written recommendations outlining solutions which minimize the legal exposure to the company.
    • Prepares filings and responses to governmental agencies consistent with the level of experience.
    • Works collaboratively cross-functionally to identify, address, and avoid privacy issues.
    • Assists in general activities of a global privacy office, e.g., supplier risk assessment, PIAs, data inventories, etc.
    • Reviews current developments in the industry and law and notifies the affected business units of potential impact.
    • Apprises the Chief Privacy Officer verbally and in writing of activities and problems within assigned area of responsibility; refers matters beyond limits of authority and expertise to the Chief Privacy Officer for direction.
    • Reviews contracts with clients and suppliers for privacy / data protection matters, negotiates with same, and advises relevant business owners of risk and implications.
    • Provides privacy legal counsel to all levels of management as well as general staff.
    • Maintains good external relationships.
    • Upholds departmental and corporate policies.
    • Complies with all performance standards for this position.
    • Upholds Crawford & Company Code of Business Conduct at all times.

    Requirements

    • Graduate of an accredited law school.
    • Admitted and a member in good standing of at least one provincial bar (or applicable bar)
    • Must complete continuing education requirements as outlined by Crawford Educational Services
    • Prefer relevant privacy certification
    • 2 to 3 years previous legal experience required.
    • Ability to research and interpret government (federal, provincial and local) regulations.
    • Ability to recognize potential for legal problems and devise solutions.
    • Very strong negotiation, analytical and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of risk management, insurance and claims administration desirable.
    • Ability to communicate with team members and manager.
    • Ability to maintain acceptable standards of office and professional conduct.
    • Ability to get along with others.
    • Ability to handle stress and manage stress in a time-sensitive environment.
    • Bilingual (French and English) would be an asset.
