Associate Scientist III, Upstream Process Development

  • This is what you will do:

    The Associate Scientist III is responsible for performing assigned experimental tasks to support the development and optimization of cell line development and cell culture processes for Alexion’s therapeutic protein candidates. The Associate Scientist III will work in collaboration with other members of Product Development and Clinical Supply, and with scientific staff in other Research & Development groups as well as Manufacturing, Quality Assurance and Quality Control groups.  The Associate Scientist III will support and execute development studies for biologics lifecycle management and yield improvement with use of process intensification.

    You will be responsible for:

    • Design and execution of experimental studies to generate stable production cell lines for therapeutic protein candidates under supervision
    • Analyzing data, developing process models, and present scientific findings in support of clone selection and upstream process development
    • Design and execute experimental studies to develop, optimize, and characterize upstream processes for therapeutic protein candidates under supervision
    • Executes experimental studies to support scale up of processes at pilot scale
    • Document study results in notebooks, and technical reports
    • Coordinate laboratory management including ordering and maintenance
    • Communicate scientific findings to colleagues within the group through informal presentations

    You will need to have:

    • A successful candidate will typically hold a BS in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Biological Sciences or related fields with at least 4 years of experience, or MS with at least 2 years of experience in biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry.
    • Extensive experience on cell line engineering or cell culture process development activities including drafting technical reports and data analysis is required.
    • Proficiency with various MS Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint is required.
    • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an lab environment.  As is typical of a lab-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: lift/carry 15/30 pounds unassisted/assisted; work comfortably in a controlled environment with and around biological, infectious, and hazardous materials; gown/degown PPE; use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.

    We would prefer for you to have:

    • Extensive knowledge of cell line engineering/development/automation, upstream process development and characterization, is preferred.
    • Experience developing first-principles model and applying modern ML techniques (i.e. PINNs, neural ODEs, etc.) to develop hybrid models is preferred.
    • Familarity with multivariate statistical analysis and machine learning fundamentals is preferred.
    • Proficiency with DoE and statistical analysis software (i.e. Design Expert, JMP, Minitab, or MODDE) is preferred.
    • Proficiency with objected-oriented or functional programming languages (i.e. Python, Julia, R) and database essentials is preferred. 
    • Experience with one or more modeling software platforms (i.e Pyomo, Modelica, gPROMs) is preferred.
