Recommends changes or upgrades to equipment, work methods, or other aspects of the process to improve efficiency and utilization of resources including labor, energy and raw materials. Additionally, Process Engineer requires a bachelor's degree of engineering. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Process Engineer works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Work is closely managed. To be a Process Engineer typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. In this function, the Process Engineer / Senior Process Engineer will be working directly with other Engineers (Process, Utilities, Controls and Packaging), Product Development, QA, Manufacturing, OEM’s, and Trades. In addition to their primary responsibilities the individual will be responsible for technical development of themselves as well as mentoring of junior engineers. Major Duties/Responsibilities:Lead process engineering efforts of small to medium capital projects:Process DesignDevelopment of Material and Energy Balances, PFD’s and P&ID’sPreparing equipment and construction bid specificationsSelection, acquisition, installation, commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting of new and existing process equipment and systemsProcess optimization during startup and early productionTraining of line supervisors, operators and maintenance personnelLead / Support of multifunctional teams:Development and scale-up of processes requiring complex mathematical and engineering analyses of data collected from multiple sourcesPrepares manufacturing feasibility assessments and capital cost estimates for various process-related projectsProvides an understanding to various parts of the business the impact of key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredients to finished productSelf Directed Technical / Administrative Skill Development:Participate in Skills Diversification ProgramMentor Junior Engineers, Engineering Student Cooperatives, and Others Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:Is an expert in developing executable processes suitable for implementation in a manufacturing facility within the project timeline and budgetAble to direct a multifunctional team in the development and implementation of processing solutions requiring complex analyses of data collected from multiple sourcesAble to define the physical and chemical transformations that must occur to produce food products along with their individual key processing parametersCapable of making critical decisions under pressure and with limited informationAble to champion and implement new ideas and technologiesProvides documentation to manufacturing leadership that is critical for the day-to-day operation and continued maintenance of a processing systemTrains manufacturing personnel including operators, supervisors, QA and maintenance on the key operating parameters of processing equipmentProvides an understanding of the impact of the key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredient and in-process material to finished productSuccessfully manages small – mid-sized capital projects, including cost, schedule, and resources (internal and contractors), as well as leading multi-functional teams in project executionAble to utilize and manage external resources to deliver project objectivesWorking Knowledge of Pumps, Heat Exchangers, Extruders, Depositors, and MixersA good understanding of mechanical equipment design and fabrication, including materials of construction and design specifications for the food industryWorking knowledge of industrial utility systems including Steam, Compressed Air, Chilled Water, and HVAC systemsFamiliarity with Industrial Power Distribution and Process Control PlatformsWorking knowledge of Computer Aided Design softwareWorking knowledge of Utility SystemsResponsible for process optimization during startup and early productionExcellent leadership and decision making abilityExcellent technical troubleshooting skillsExcellent interpersonal skillsExcellent written and oral communication skillsMust be open to and comfortable with changeOpen to travel based on assignment (50%) averaged over 5 years Majority of Travel will be within the existing US Region Manufacturing footprint Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Education:BS Degree in Chemical, Food, Biosystems, or Agricultural Engineering (Mechanical Engineers with process experience in the food industry will also be considered) Experience:3-5 years in the field of Process EngineeringMinimum 2 years of experience in the Confectionery, Food, Beverage, Consumer Goods and/or Pharmaceutical industry is strongly preferredExperience in leading the Product Commercialization and Process Engineering portion of multiple projects is requiredExperience with process scale-up, PFD’s, P&ID’s, GMP’s, process estimating, and process design for the food industry are required Does this describe you?Does the candidate have at least a bachelor's or higher in Chemical Engineering?Does the candidate have experience with large scale capital projects?Does the candidate have experience with PFDs and/or P&IDsDoes the candidate have experience with food manufacturing?Does the candidate have experience with scaling up processes from pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing?Does the candidate have experience working with marketing and/or product development personnel?The Ideal CandidateCandidate must have experience with scaling up processes from bench-top to pilot plant and full scale manufacturing. Experience with food manufacturing strongly preferred but will consider candidates from CPG that have experience with high-speed manufacturing. Candidates ideally will have at least a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, but we will also consider candidates with a mechanical engineering degree and solid experience doing process work.
