As a Manufacturing Process Engineer, you will manage apply scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to a specific technical field or discipline. Integration and support of a technical line support team is the primary focus of this role. This is an opportunity based in Austin, TX. What You'll Do PROJECT MANAGEMENT Plans and conducts small- to medium-size assigned projects within engineering specialty requiring conventional types of plans, investigations, and/or equipment. Coordinates and monitors activities/projects. Reviews plans and monitors status of implementation for those assigned to project. Makes judgments regarding quality of implementation within discipline. Employs contingency plans to recover from schedule slippage and financial overruns when appropriate, e.g., tracks actual expenditures compared to projected cash flow for own project. Estimates and coordinates resources needed (materials, budget, time and people) to accomplish assigned individual tasks, e.g., coordinates work with operations, technicians, and other engineers. Prepares contingency plans and budget for assignments. Jointly responsible for achieving project targets in support of business objectives. TECHNICAL/DESIGN Anticipates future directions. Benchmarks internally and externally. Recognizes changes in the environment and present resources as indicators of future problems and opportunities. Prepares for such eventualities, e.g., initiates plan to acquire new engineering skills required by changes in technology. Independently executes the design of products/processes/equipment/systems/facilities by applying standard engineering theories, concepts, and techniques within the discipline. Independently investigates, conducts tests or experiments, gathers data, performs preliminary analysis and reports findings. Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans. PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION Creates/modified designs for intermediate problems. Designs/modifies complex components/processes. Writes detailed design specifications, e.g., creates a new production flow diagram. Modifies an existing design to improve a manufacturing process. Uses Statistical Process Control analysis to identify patterns/trends, grasps complexities, and sees relationships among data. Makes process improvement recommendations. Analyzes problems from multiple perspectives. Improves methods/designs/processes. Recognizes and implements good ideas/innovations/costs reductions. Consistently generates/adapts original solutions to problems and implements them as standardized practices. Creatively applies others' design ideas. ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE Mentors others by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Interfaces primarily with technical line support personnel as well as TPM cross-functional support team. Communicates regularly with inter-organizational and outside contacts from the TPM organization. Prepares written communication and reports on daily/weekly/monthly activities. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents with team members, automation vendors, technicians, and other technical personnel, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communications protocols, e.g., develops proposals, conducts reviews, provides audience targeted content. Direct mentorship and training of technicians and support personnel. Experience You'll Bring Required Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Science or closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and technical work experience. Minimum 2 years industrial experience. Exposure to manufacturing processes as it applies to high-speed, high-volume, fully automated, multi-component assembly operations. Experience troubleshooting processes to find solutions related to availability, performance, and quality. Regulated industry experience to document all actions involving changes to established processes. Preferred Exposure to Six Sigma principles, Green Belt preferred. Understanding of DMAIC process to find/implement root cause remediations. Exposure to Lean Manufacturing principles.
