Special Process Lab Technician

The Special Processes Lab Technician performs heat treat for different types of aircraft and manufacturers and operates the chemical laboratory while performing repairs safely and within budgeted time and ensuring and delivering a quality product. 

Essential Job Duties:

1. Operates solution and aging heat treat ovens. Performs aluminum heat treating.
2. Operates heat treat ovens and performs steel heat treating.
3. Ensures all heat treat ovens are functioning within the required limits and are operated within the correct parameters.
4. Assists in temperature uniformity surveys (TUS) and adjusts controls for offsets as necessary.
5. Tracks adjustments and repairs made on the heat treat ovens and tracks repairs in the appropriate log.
6. Operates cadmium and zinc-nickel plating equipment.
7. Operates the handheld impressors, rockwell regular, and rockwell superficial hardness testers. Performs hardness testing for aluminums and steels. Downloads results in an Excel format.
8. Operates laboratory and properly handles chemicals.
9. Mixes the proper salt solution, programs, and maintains appropriate records of testing.
10. Performs testing requirements of heat treating, cadmium, zinc-nickel plating, hardness testing alodine 1200S and alkaline degreasers, cleaners, etches and keeps appropriate records.
11. Ensures all special processes have been substantiated and are up to date before using.
12. Creates MOR’s and schedules maintenance, troubleshoots, calibrates or tests for the equipment in the heat treat cad plate or lab room as needed.
13. Ensures all needed materials are on hand and orders as needed. Checks the expiration dates and removes expired items as required.
14. Keeps the work area clean at all times.
15. Interfaces effectively with management and other departments.
16. Executes routines, non-routines, AWR’s and inhouse work orders.
17. Assists in the training of other employees and helps in the performance of their assigned duties.

Secondary Duties:

Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Accountabilities:

Accountable to the Support Services Supervisor.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior heat treat experience.
3. Must be able to certify in cadmium and zinc-nickel plating with SIFCO ASC.
4. Must have a working understanding of laboratory equipment and be able to handle toxic and flammable chemicals.
5. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

Preferred:

1. FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate

Physical Requirements:

1. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
2. Normal or corrected hearing
3. Visual acuity must be a minimum of 20/40 corrected and must be able to distinguish color
4. Must be able to breathe through a full-face respirator
5. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals and requires the use of all safety equipment
6. Must be able to work extended periods of time with support of a breathing apparatus
7. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and stand for prolonged periods of time, climb ladders and stands.
8. May be subject to noise in excess of 85dB.
