POSITION HIGHLIGHTS Full Time, 40 hours per week Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Current vacancies are located in the towns listed above, however this recruitment will also be used to fill future vacancies. THE ROLE As a skilled mechanic, you will perform a variety of diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance-related duties focused on the Department's diverse fleet. This includes Class 1 through 8 vehicles, heavy construction equipment, complex mechanical equipment, and highway maintenance equipment. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Residency within 30 miles of the job location. For candidates without a CDL:�As a condition of permanent employment, selected candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B, with 'tank and airbrake endorsements,' and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) within 6-months of initial employment. Selected candidates will be enrolled in, and expected to complete, an agency paid selected CDL training program to assist in preparation for CDL licensure. This requires a selected candidate to obtain a CDL learning permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles. CDL permit is required by date of hire.�� For candidates who already possess a CDL:�Be sure to indicate the Type, Issuing Agency, License number, Expiration Date, and all endorsements in the 'Licenses and Professional Certificates' section of your application. You will also be required to thoroughly complete the Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1) form. Candidates who currently possess a Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), be sure to include the MEC expiration date in the 'Licenses and Professional Certificates' section of your application form. Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the requirements of the position. Those applicants who hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) who are invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview. As a support to Highway Operations units, various storm events will require employees to be at work prior to, during, and after a storm or weather event, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends. Additionally, in preparation for the winter season, overtime may be required to prepare the fleet and equipment. Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, whenever your services are needed, to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process. PLEASE NOTE: Prior to hire, selected candidates will be required to complete a preemployment physical and work assessment, which will include a respirator physical to be in compliance with the Department's Respirator Policy.     PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In a state agency, this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices and codes; diagnoses failure in all types of automotive and heavy mobile equipment; services, dismantles, overhauls and reassembles front ends, engines, standard and automatic transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems and automotive electrical systems; constructs and repairs any needed parts; welds or brazes parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding; makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks; keeps necessary records; in smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area; may perform duties related to similar trade areas as required; may operate testing equipment required to diagnose automotive electronic components; may act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts; may operate heavy equipment; may respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports; performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records; some ability to utilize computer software.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

    Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled automotive and mechanical equipment trades. Note: For State Employees, this is interpreted at the level of Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    1. Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience. 2. Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience. 3. Experience performing technical duties within the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience performing diesel, B-Tech level, and light truck repairs Education in diesel technology repairs and/or auto repairs, heavy equipment repair Experience maintaining and performing diagnostic repairs in relation to various makes and models, heavy trucks, construction equipment, and small engines Experience working with automotive repair software, including diagnostic and repair information research Experience with vehicle electric system diagnosis Experience in the areas of repair welding and fabrication Experience diagnosing and repairing basic hydraulic systems Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel Experience with record keeping

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

    CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

    At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. 2. A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions. 2. The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
