Are you looking for a career where you'll be part of a small, dynamic team? Do the intricate details of a high-tech product's design excite you? Do you take pride in ensuring the highest level of customer experience? Then this position may be for you.
FarSounder, Inc. is a small and growing marine sonar company located in Warwick, Rhode Island. We've invented and developed a revolutionary type of sonar that shows the user a 3D image of the underwater environment in front of their vessel (similar to radar, but in 3D and underwater). FarSounder's products are proudly made in the USA with all final assembly and testing performed in-house.
We’re looking to expand our team with someone who will help ensure our customers continue to receive the highest quality products and service. Being a small company, you can expect to work with all members of our team from engineering to production to sales.
This entry-level position will focus primarily on three specific needs with opportunities to grow into more senior positions along one or more of these trajectories. Initially, the role will consist of approximately equal parts Production, Customer Support, and Engineering R&D Support:
Production
Getting products out the door is at the fundamental core of FarSounder’s growth. Your work will include all aspects of FarSounder’s production processes including vendor management, final assembly, and in-house testing of hardware. One goal of this role is to improve existing documentation and production procedures to enable future assembly technicians to take over many of the assembly processes, thus enabling you to take on more in-depth responsibilities.
Customer Support
FarSounder prides itself on its superior level of customer service. Your touch will be an important part of how our customers perceive the quality and performance of our products. In this aspect of this role, your work will include responding to incoming customer support requests, handling basic troubleshooting, and processing equipment being returned for service. As you gain experience with support issues, your input will be integrated into the product development process. There may be opportunities to visit customer vessels (often in exotic locations) to assist with on-site support/service issues. As you become more experienced with the products, you will have opportunities to help represent the team at various customer facing events around the world (such as product demos, trade shows, and technical conferences).
Engineering R&D Support
One important component of FarSounder’s culture is our priority of continual improvement, development, and expansion of our technologies. This means that we value innovations and are continually working on new capabilities and enhancements. When not working on shipping products and supporting happy customers, you will work closely with the rest of the technical team’s R&D efforts. These efforts may include assisting in electronics design, developing new mechanical systems, supporting regulatory approval processes, developing new prototype testing capabilities, and/or supporting on-water data collection efforts (i.e. boat trips for data collection and product testing).
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in the fundamentals of engineering with demonstrated critical thinking skills. There is no need to be an expert in a specific field. We prefer someone who is open to becoming knowledgeable in all areas and is not afraid of tackling new challenges and learning new things. Of course, given the nature of sonar products, interest/experience in electronics, acoustics, and/or mechanical design is an advantage.
This position requires light travel. We anticipate you will have opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally 1-3 weeks per year as part of the Customer Support and Engineering R&D Support components of this role. Our team believes in mentoring new employees with the goal of extending their capabilities, enabling them to take over larger responsibilities as they grow.
As FarSounder continues to expand, we would like you to develop your career with us. The ideal candidate will leverage what they learn in this position and help define what their future role will become.
