Full-Time Faculty Position in Architecture
  • Bennington College
  • Bennington, VT FULL_TIME
  • Bennington College invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Architecture, beginning in the fall term of 2024. The ideal candidate will be an artist, designer, and educator who can engage undergraduate students to mobilize their intellect, imagination, and proprioceptive capabilities toward understanding what it means to contribute meaningfully to the built environment. We seek candidates interested in offering courses with relevance across disciplines, and that build on fundamental drawing, modeling, and planning skills. Candidates with a lens on architecture as it relates to spatial justice and/or historical and contemporary art practice as demonstrated by built work, writing, or exhibitions are especially welcome to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with an M.Arch or equivalent attainment in a related field.

Faculty members at Bennington are teacher-practitioners whose professional work is in ongoing dialogue with their teaching and advising. Full-time faculty teach five courses per year, and fully engaged student advising is an expectation. Situated within a strong visual arts discipline group, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing a broad array of undergraduate courses in architecture ranging from the introductory to advanced levels.

Bennington College is a small residential liberal arts college in southern Vermont, long distinguished for its progressive approach to higher education. The College was founded in 1932 on the principle of active engagement in learning, which is manifest in individualized plans of study developed by students together with faculty. As the first liberal arts college in the country to include the visual and performing arts as equal partners to the humanities, the goal of the Visual Arts curriculum focuses on the relationship that creative practices have with the life of the mind and body. Our curriculum is resolutely not meant to duplicate an art school rubric; rather it employs the visual arts as a means of bringing sophisticated ideas and questions into visual form. Bennington’s open curricular structures facilitate innovative teaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and allow Bennington students to study broadly. The Visual Art faculty work collaboratively to review and critique work across all of the disciplines.

Bennington serves a diverse student population inclusive of members of ethnically/racially minoritized, international, LGBTQIA , and disability communities as well as diverse gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and political beliefs. Our staff and faculty also reflect diverse and intersecting backgrounds and identities. All employees are expected to be respectful and responsive to these differences in the service of building community that promotes student and employee success. Each individual (faculty, staff and students) is accountable for upholding these values. The College’s approach to pluralism and inclusivity—both as fields of inquiry and practice—prioritizes flexible thought and invites the examination of access, value, power, and privilege through its institutional policies and areas of study. We encourage applicants from diverse realms of interest, backgrounds, experience, and accomplishment to apply.

In recognition of the importance of collaboration to architectural practice, and employment challenges sometimes faced by practitioners in small communities, the College will consider applications by teams of two who wish to share equally a single full-time faculty position. Applicants must each submit an individual application and indicate in their cover letters that they are applying jointly.

Candidates should apply online by submitting: a) letter of application that describes teaching experience and professional work, and includes a reflection on the candidate’s approach to creating a diverse and inclusive environment through teaching, research, and/or service; b) curriculum vitae; c) link to the candidate's personal website and/or digital files; d) descriptions of at least three courses that the candidate would be interested in offering; and e) the names and contact information for three references.

Preference will be given to applications received by December 15, 2023. This position requires the successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
