PT Biology Lab Technician

  • Stark State is seeking a qualified and dedicated individual to join our Biology Department as a part time lab technician. This part-time role plays a crucial part in supporting laboratory activities in our Akron facility, facilitating student learning and ensuring the smooth operation of the assigned laboratories.

    Typical Hours: (up to 29 hours per week)

    Hours of work for this role are typically worked between Mon-Fri, 8a-5p (up to 29 hours per week). Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekends, as needed.

    Pay: $17.03 - $22.99/hour, commensurate with experience

    Typical Responsibilities Include:

    • Prepare and set up biology laboratory experiments, lab practicals and activities in accordance with the curriculum for all biology sections.
    • Ensure proper functioning, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Report any malfunctions or issues promptly.
    • Assist in maintaining an organized inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Monitor stock levels and coordinate with the department for timely replenishment.
    • Work with faculty to ensure necessary laboratory materials (and laboratory exam materials) are available as needed.
    • Oversee biology laboratory safety including training, safety contracts, chemical and hazardous material storage and disposal.
    • Troubleshoot and provide prompt solutions to technical issues that may arise during laboratory sessions.
    • Oversee and coordinate the cadaver-based anatomy and physiology open labs including care and preparation of cadavers.

    To be Considered You'll Need:
    An Associate's degree in biology or a closely related discipline is required.
    A minimum of (one) 1 year lab experience in biology or closely related discipline is required.

    Preferred Qualifications (although not required):
    A Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related discipline is preferred.
    Cadaver dissection experience preferred.

    INSTRUCTIONAL FEES

    All instructional and general fees for credit, audit, or non-credit courses offered at Stark State College will be paid by the College from income of the College budgeted for employee benefits up to an amount per academic semester not to exceed such fees for six credit hours per semester.
    A part-time employee may enroll in any section or course on a spaceavailable basis. To qualify for this benefit, employees:
    • Shall take the course(s) during a semester in which they are currently working.
    • Shall have instructed a minimum of 8 credit hours or 13 CEU’s at Stark State College or if paid hourly, worked a minimum of 320 hours prior to receiving this benefit.
    • Must obtain the approval of their supervisor. Employees paid on an hourly basis shall refer to the minimum hours worked requirement to qualify for the benefit. The employee’s primary position during the semester the benefit is used determines the employee’s eligibility.
    Eligible part-time employees desiring this benefit must complete an Instructional Fee Waiver form available on mystarkstate and must submit it to the employee’s supervisor for approval.


    Instructional fees are available for IRS dependents of part-time employees. All instructional and general fees for credit, audit, or non-credit courses offered at Stark State College will be paid by the College from income of the College budgeted for employee benefits for dependents of part-time employees for six semester hours per academic year per employee.

    Dependents of part-time employees may enroll in any section or course on a space-available basis. The student will be required to pay the processing fee and all other incidental fees associated with the course enrolled in each semester.

    Dependents of employees classified as student workers, substitute workers, or seasonal workers will not be eligible to participate in this program. Dependents of part-time employees who are eligible for tuition waivers such as College Credit Plus, various scholarships and grants, and other such nonloan programs must use those funds prior to use of the Instructional Fee Waiver benefit.
    PENSION
    The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), was established to provide a secure retirement for Ohio's public employees and their families. OPERS is available to all staff Members. The College contributes 14% of the employees' wages for the retirement benefit and the employee contributes 10%.
