Biology - Professor of the Practice - Investigating Nature
  • Loyola University - New Orleans
  • Orleans, LA OTHER
  • As the first natural science course in the Loyola Core, Investigating Nature plays a critical role in introducing non-science majors to the process of science, increasing science literacy, and strengthening quantitative skills. The course was originally designed to be team-taught by three instructors who would work together to demonstrate how similar tools and methods are used to ask questions, test hypotheses, and solve problems across scientific disciplines and to emphasize the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinarity. Another important aspect of Investigating Nature is that each instructor is encouraged to focus their module on a topic or question that they themselves find exciting with the hope and expectation that this enthusiasm would be transferred to students who otherwise may not be very interested in science.

The Department of Biological Sciences at Loyola University New Orleans seeks highly qualified applicants for a Professor of the Practice to begin teaching Investigating Nature in Fall 2024.Investigating Nature is an introductory and experiential course for non-majors that focuses on some aspect of biology to demonstrate the process of science, strengthen quantitative skills, and increase scientific literacy.

The new hire will move into an existing office space and does not need a research lab. Ideally, the new hire will have a continuing, ten-month appointment to teach four courses during each fall and spring semester and to help advise up to 20 biology majors each semester. The successful applicant will have an advanced degree in biology; a strong commitment to rigorous, innovative, and inclusive teaching and academic advising at the undergraduate level; and ability to use Canvas to deliver course content and routinely post grades.
