    Job Description

    The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CArEE) at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) seeks to strengthen its existing research and educational program in structural engineering by inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position commencing fall semester 2024. The appointment is anticipated to be at the assistant professor level.

    About the Department Missouri S&T's CArEE Department, with 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 25 total faculty, positively impacts society through ground-breaking research and high-quality graduate and undergraduate education spanning a legacy of over 150 years. The CArEE department's research awards exceeded $8.0 M in 2022-23. The department has over 840 students across the three-degree programs. The department enjoys strong support from alumni and corporate partners with seven endowed professorships. Recent fundraising resulted in a $7.5-million expansion for the Clayco-Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory, which opened in 2021. The CArEE department and programs are highly ranked in US News and in the World University Rankings (Shanghai rankings).

    Research thrusts in the department align with stated campus investment areas of Sustainability and Resilience, Smart Systems, Sustainable Energy, Critical Minerals, and Resources. and additional equipment and facilities are available through active leadership and participation in S&T's Research Centers: Center for Research in Energy and Environment, Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, Center for Intelligent Infrastructure, and the Materials Research Center.     We are seeking applicants with expertise in complementary areas of structural engineering, with a focus in engineering mechanics of steel structures and materials is desired. Abilities and interest to collaborate in research topics of civil infrastructure sustainability and resiliency including changing climate and multi-hazard environments, innovative and hybrid systems, multi-scale computational mechanics, reliability analysis, and multi-hazard simulation and mitigation is sought in a successful candidate.

    The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in interdisciplinary research within the department and across campus, including collaborative opportunities with campus research centers such as the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (http://cies.mst.edu/), the Kent D. Peaslee Steel Manufacturing Research Center (http://www.psmrc.net/about/), the Center for Intelligent Infrastructure (www.cii.mst.edu), the Missouri Center for Transportation Infrastructure (www.mcti.missouri.edu), the Intelligent Systems Center (see http://isc.mst.edu/), and the Materials Research Center (http://mrc.mst.edu/). The successful candidate may also be able to leverage resources made available through one or more of these centers. The department enjoys strong support from alumni and corporate partners; recent fundraising resulted in the $7.5-million expansion, the Clayco - Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory, opened in 2021. The department's civil engineering program has been ranked among the top 35 undergraduate and top 50 graduate civil engineering programs by U.S. News and World Report.     The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the potential to establish and grow a strong research program and reach a high level of scholarly and teaching excellence. Candidates must have earned an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or equivalent and earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field. Superior communication and interpersonal skills, leadership capabilities, the ability to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and the ability to motivate and inspire undergraduate and graduate students are also required attributes. Practical experience as well as being professionally active and visible in national/international societies in the applicant's area of expertise will be considered an asset. Licensure as a professional engineer is required or must be attained within 5 years of appointment.
