Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Computer Science typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Chatham University welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Data Science.

    Chatham currently offers a BS in Applied Data Science Analytics and minors in Applied Data Science Analytics and Applied Machine learning.

    The successful candidate for this position will teach courses that support these programs, contribute to potential future curriculum development related to data science and business analytics, work with faculty from other areas of the university to explore data science applications, and mentor students.

    Position Summary:

    This nine-month position requires research and teaching related to data analytics, participation in curriculum development, advising students, and University service. In addition, the faculty member in this position will be expected to develop relationships with industry partners to provide experiential learning opportunities for Chatham students. Renewal and promotion follow Chatham standards for tenure track faculty.


    Responsibilities & Duties:

    • Teach 18 credits per academic year in courses such as Fundamentals of Data Science, Business Analytics, Data Visualization and Communication, Computer Programming I & II, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and Data Science Ethics.
    • Participate in curriculum development related to data science.
    • Serve as an academic advisor to students.
    • Engage in scholarly endeavors.
    • Engage in service to the University, to the discipline, and to the broader community.
    • Develop relationships with industry partners to provide experiential learning opportunities for Chatham students.

    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD or other doctoral degree in a relevant field including, but not limited to, data science, business analytics, statistics, machine learning, and engineering. ABD candidates with anticipated Ph.D./D.B.A. completion by August 2024 will be considered.
    • Ability to teach courses in programming, data modeling, data visualization, and machine learning using industry-standard programming languages Python and R.
    • Practical experience with data analytics outside of academia.
    • Ability to teach course modules covering no- or low-code tools such as Tableau or PowerBI.
    • Commitment to contributing to an inclusive and equitable campus community.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working with faculty, staff and students with diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives.
    • Experience teaching Python or R, preferably in a higher-education institution.
    • Experience teaching data science subjects, preferably in a higher-education institution.
    • Potential for collaborative interdisciplinary work using data analytics to solve problems in a range of fields.
