    Be part of the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) mission to drive more trade and investment between the Southeastern region of the US and the UK. The US and the UK are each other’s closest allies and our economies are intertwined. Our trading relationship is worth over $400 billion and we are each other’s biggest investors. This opening would allow you to take a senior leadership role in a team of 10 people dedicated to deepening and strengthening this economic relationship.

    This is an exciting opportunity to lead the UK Government’s trade and investment relationship between the Southeastern region of the US and the UK; this region includes the states and territories of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Based at the British Consulate-General in either Atlanta or Miami, you will work closely with senior decision-makers across the British Government’s US network, including at the British Embassy in Washington DC. As the team is located across the two cities, there is an expectation of regular travel between Atlanta and Miami, and around the region. You will be an important member of the US network’s leadership team, offering advice to Consul Generals on commercial and trade policy matters. You will provide agile and visible leadership of the DBT team in the Southeast US region ensuring delivery of your region’s targets, objectives, strategy and personal development goals.

    Roles and responsibilities:

    As the Regional Director for Trade and Investment in the US Network, you will:

    • Be an inspiring leader for the Southeast US team (10 people), driving trade and investment between the region and the UK. You will be responsible for ensuring that the team’s activities align with broader the UK Government’s priorities, including net zero, science and technology and levelling up.
    • Design and lead a coherent and balanced regional plan for the Southeast US region to maximise trade and investment with the UK.
    • Deliver on the UK’s State-level Strategy, driving trade and investment with individual States including through business engagement, state or city partnerships and state-level procurement opportunities.
    • Lead and develop an effective, communicative, inclusive team that values learning and development and an open, respectful feedback culture. Regularly travel across the region and provide in-person leadership across both locations.
    • Lead on planning and delivery of UK ministerial and senior visits to support and achieve our trade and investment priorities.
    • Ensure efficient account management of existing and potential high value investors and trade partners, supporting the team to do the same.
    • Work with policy colleagues to identify any barriers to trade between Southeast states and the UK, collaborating across HMG and external stakeholders to develop plans to address barriers and ensure UK companies benefit from the removal of business constraints.
    • Contribute to the corporate well-being and success of the broader Consulate team, including participating in crisis preparation and response where necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1

    Essential on arrival:

    • Significant professional experience, gained within a business or economic development role.
    • In-depth knowledge of business in the Southeast US region.

    • Excellent stakeholder management abilities.

    Language requirements:

    Language: English
    Level of language required: excellent verbal and written English.
    • Knowledge of Spanish is useful, though not required.
