    The Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. We are seeking candidates in the area of databases, data management systems, and data engineering.


    We are broadly interested in researchers working in emerging areas such as cloud-based systems, cyberinfrastructure, crowd-sourced data management, very large databases (VLDB), knowledge discovery, data security, data engineering. Possibilities for collaboration include the Hawaii Data Science Institute’s efforts in building scientific cyberinfrastructure. 


    We are seeking candidates with expertise across a range of areas, including foundational topics like data modeling, query languages, and database systems, and emerging fields such as distributed databases, big data technologies, and specialized databases. Additionally, candidates with a strong technical expertise and experience in interdisciplinary areas like the semantic web, linked data, or data commons are encouraged to apply.


    Applicants should be prepared to instruct in fundamental computer science topics, including but not limited to data modeling and design, as well as query languages. Additionally, candidates should be capable of teaching specialized courses in databases or data science, aligned with their own areas of expertise.

The ICS department has special expertise in data science, visualization, and software engineering. We work closely with the Hawaii Data Science Institute and other units across the system including astronomy, oceanography, and engineering.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Teach and develop courses in information and computer sciences; develop an extramurally funded research program; publish outstanding work in leading scholarly journals and conference proceedings; supervise graduate students; mentor and advise undergraduates; provide department, college, and university service; other scholarly duties as assigned.


    Minimum qualifications:

    • Earned Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely-related discipline by the time of appointment.

    • Demonstrated capability for creative, high-quality research

    • Demonstrated ability to lead a research program involving students and postdocs

    • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels

    • Strong potential for securing external funding


    Desirable qualifications:

    • Industry experience with scalable data frameworks: Track record in the industry working on scalable data analysis frameworks, demonstrating an understanding of real-world challenges and solutions in processing and analyzing complex datasets. 

    • Collaboration with tech businesses: A history of collaboration or partnership with leading tech or startups on data-centric projects or research initiatives, ensuring potential industry-academia partnerships for the institution.

    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives: Actual involvement in initiatives or programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM and inline with the values of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
