Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Geospatial Sciences

  • The Department of Water Resources Management in the College of Science, Technology, and Agriculture at Central State University is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Geospatial Sciences. It is preferred that the candidate holds a doctoral degree in Geography, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field. Consideration will be given to ABD candidates who have demonstrated excellent records in research and publication and are expected to complete a degree not beyond the first year of employment. This three-year position is funded by NIFA CBG grant to strengthen UAS education and research. Priority will be given to candidates who possess excellent knowledge in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), and programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB. It is expected that the successful candidate should work collectively and effectively with faculty and students from diverse academic and ethnic backgrounds; have well-developed verbal and written communication skills; and have a strong working ethic of integrity, independence, and accountability. The candidate should be familiar with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and 1890 Land Grant missions and commitments in achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in education and research.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The primary responsibilities of this Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:
    • Support in developing curricular materials for UAS course and summer workshops.
    • Support in conducting UAS summer workshop and implementing its related activities.
    • Lead the effort in UAS club management, student recruitment, and activity planning.
    • Engage in field UAS data collection, UAS imagery processing, machine/deep learning algorithms development, and accuracy assessment.
    • Provide mentoring and advising to undergraduate research assistants.
    • Attend project meetings and discussion on progress, research planning, tasks coordination, and scientific data management.
    • Document research approaches and archive UAS imagery, field records, and spatial data.
    • Submit quarterly reports and contribute to annual project progress reports.
    • Present findings at academic conference and prepare manuscript for publication.
    • Participate in university and professional development activities as needed.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Doctoral degree in Geography, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field. Outstanding ADBs who are close to dissertation defense could be considered.
    • Excellent knowledge of GIS, remote sensing, and Unmanned Aerial System.
    • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in the areas of Geography, Environmental Sciences, or closely related fields.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in UAS flight operation, data collection, and imagery processing.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency in GIS and remote sensing software such as ArcGIS, ENVI, and Pix4D.
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary scientists.
    • Demonstrated skill in securing grants or strong potential to secure extramural funding.
    • Experience in mentoring students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
