The ASCPL is hiring a Local History and Museum Specialist who will be a vital partner in the development and opening of the new Akron History Center (AHC) in downtown Akron with duties including helping to create and maintain procedures for museum operations; creating and maintaining agreements with AHC partners regarding the curation and rotation of exhibits; coordinating tours of the AHC and helps with other seasonal event exhibit rotations; working with Downtown Akron Partnership and other organizations to recruit, train, and schedule volunteers to meet AHC needs; and coordinating with multiple internal and external partners about AHC needs. The role also plays a part in the creation, rotation, and promotion of exhibits in the Special Collections agency at Main Library, including promoting exhibits via social media; processing, digitizing, and creating metadata for archival collections; and reviewing and maintaining material to be included in Archives Catalog and Summit Memory.
Required: Bachelor’s degree in History, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, or related field. Knowledge of the principles and practices of archival and museum standards. Knowledge of the standards and best practices for the care, management, and exhibition of historic materials, including artifacts. Knowledge of archival and digital preservation practices. Knowledge of local history resources. Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom as they apply to public libraries. Ability to plan and conduct programs for Library customers. Ability to create public displays of information using physical, video, and digital tools and use image processing software and digital collection management systems. Ability to create- and manage a range of programs for AHC and Library customers. Skill in customer service. Ability to engage new audiences and promote AHC and Library services to all customers. A valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and reliable personal transportation. Ability to pass criminal background and education verification checks.
Preferred: Master’s degree in History, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, or related field. 2 to 5 or more years of relevant experience.
