    Position:

    The department of Secondary Education at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in History-Social Science Education at the rank of Assistant Professor.

    The successful candidate will teach secondary History-Social Science education courses in the credential and M.A. programs and will conduct research in the areas of teacher preparation, history and social science education, or related fields.  The successful candidate will supervise the fieldwork of student teachers and Interns seeking the preliminary teaching credential in Social Science.  The candidate will help credential candidates deepen secondary-level students’ inquiry, analysis, interpretation and literacy skills in history-social science. The successful candidate will have opportunities to focus on the teaching of three requirements experiencing increased visibility and impact in the contemporary curriculum:  American Government, Economics, and Ethnic Studies.

    Responsibilities:

    The typical teaching load is 12 units per semester, plus student advisement, and committee work at multiple university levels. Newly hired tenure-track faculty are typically released from one class assignment (3 units) for each of their first four semesters.  Department classes meet in the late afternoons and evenings.  Opportunities for reassigned time for research, program coordination, and other projects are available.  In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university.  Given CSUN’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

    The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the Secondary Education Department and the University for recommending reappointment, tenure and promotion, with emphasis placed on teaching effectiveness, scholarly and creative achievement, and service to the University and community.  The successful candidate is expected to teach credential and masters level courses in History-Social Science education, conduct and disseminate discipline-specific research and/or creative work, supervise and/or advise students, develop curriculum, and participate in faculty governance.  The Secondary Education Department is developing a new master’s degree program in History-Social Science education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the design and implementation of this new program.  The successful candidate will also be expected to help lead the development or revision of credential-program curriculum to address a new state-level requirement for Ethnic Studies in high schools.

    Required Qualifications:  

    The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for secondary-education students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service. The following qualifications are required:

    • Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in History-Social Science Education, History, Ethnic Studies, or a related field; or Education, Urban Schooling, Teacher Education, Social Sciences and Comparative Education, or a related field; from an accredited institution, by the date of hire.
    • At least 3 years of experience teaching History-Social Science at the secondary level.
    • Evidence of knowledge of current curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment practices in History-Social Science education, at the middle and high school levels, and the ability to model those for teachers, demonstrated through scholarly and/or professional activities.
    • Demonstrated ability in and commitment to culturally responsive teaching and mentoring a diverse student population, including racially, ethnically, culturally and/or linguistically diverse students.
    • Evidence of familiarity with the Common Core State Standards, including the English Language Development Standards.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and secondary-school teachers.
    • Evidence of, or clear potential for, scholarly activity.

     Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience teaching in secondary-level settings with student demographics similar to that of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
    • Knowledge of current scholarship in History-Social Science education at the secondary level.
    • Experience teaching or knowledge of current Ethnic Studies curriculum.
    • Experience supervising student teachers, mentoring new teachers, and/or providing professional development for educators, ideally with diverse populations and using inclusive approaches.
    • College or university-level teaching experience at teacher credential or MA levels, both in-person and online.
    • Experience in the use of educational technology in history-social science instruction.
    • Experiences with school-university partnerships or partnerships with other community agencies.
