Assistant Professor, Tenure Track: Art History - Modern Art

  • The School of Art and Design within the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University seeks a dynamic educator for a tenure track faculty position in in Art History specializing in modern art with attention given to material culture, design, and/or craft in a global context from 1800-1945 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will begin in August 2024. The annual salary for this position will be $54,000-$60,000, depending on experience. 

    We seek candidates whose teaching and research would add to our existing strength in Asian art history, and which might include Africa/African diaspora, the Middle East, or any regional subfield of the Americas. In our robust division, faculty members teach in multiple areas. We especially welcome applications from candidates with a secondary area or transnational expertise who could teach occasional courses in canonical European and/or American art. A strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and teaching is expected. 

    Scholars who engage with museum and curatorial studies are encouraged to apply, as well as those who might wish to pursue interdisciplinary connections with campus programs and minors (including, but not limited to: Africana Studies, Film Studies, Global Studies, Women and Gender Studies). 

    Qualifications 
    Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Art History and demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, The successful candidate will have an active record of research and scholarship at the national level and growing recognition in the field; three years teaching experience or equivalent is preferred. 

    Responsibilities 

    • Engage with divisional & university-wide service including, but not limited to, recruitment, advising students, and other administrative duties expected from faculty.
    • Commit to the university's goals of mentorship, inclusion, and intersections.
    • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year.
    • Conduct scholarly research to support tenure & promotion.
    • Serve as a model of professionalism and act as a resource for students within the teaching-learning environment.
