    Minimum Qualifications
    Appalachian State University's Department of Communication seeks an Assistant Professor of Media Law beginning August 2024.

    • An earned doctorate in Communication or a related field or a JD is required.
      • Candidates who are ABD will also be considered, but their tenure-track appointment would require evidence of successful defense of their dissertation by July 31, 2024.
    • All applicants must display evidence of their potential to teach communication law and journalism courses at the undergraduate level to contribute to departmental service, and to maintain a program of scholarly or creative activity.
    • Qualifications include research and teaching interests related to media law and the First Amendment.

    The Department of Communication offers five major programs of study: advertising, communication studies, digital journalism, electronic media/broadcasting, and public relations. The department employs 40 full-time faculty members dedicated to teaching approximately 1,000 communication majors.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • The successful candidate will teach communication law and other courses in the Digital Journalism major curriculum as well as departmental core courses as needed.
    • The typical teaching load is three courses per semester.
    • Other responsibilities include advising students, maintaining a program of scholarly activity, and participating in departmental, university, and professional service.
    • Teaching responsibilities may include teaching courses at Appalachian State's Hickory campus.

    ABD Description
    ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

    No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
