  • The Accounting Area in the Orfalea College of Business at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking to fill a full-time/academic year tenure-track position in business law as part of the university’s year-round operations initiative with a contemplated appointment in summer of 2024.

    Applicants must have the ability to work with diverse students. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

    Primary duties and responsibilities are to: (A) teach undergraduate and graduate business law courses; (B) maintain an active portfolio of research in business law accompanied with publication in high quality law journals and other approved peer reviewed publications; and (C) perform extensive area, college, and university service duties (e.g., curriculum committee, academic senate, etc.).

    OCOB is accredited by AACSB, and the selected candidate will engage in scholarly research and publication in business law topics to permit the attainment and maintenance of classification as a Scholarly Academic under AACSB-International accreditation standards.

    Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. An earned Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree from a United States law school accredited by the American Bar Association;
    2. Membership as an admitted attorney (active or inactive status) in good standing in the bar of at least one state in the United States; and
    3. Publication as a listed author or co-author, within five (5) years of the date of application for this position, of at least one "qualifying business law article" in a law journal which is either: (a) ranked with a combined score of 6.5 or higher by Washington & Lee University Law Journal ranking; or (b) published by a law school ranked within the top 60 law schools as ranked by U.S. News and World Report for 2023-24 (see: https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings).  A written and signed firm acceptance of publication by a qualifying law journal under the criteria above, as of the date of application for this position, for a qualifying article not yet published, will be acceptable in satisfying this requirement.  (Note:  Applicants are encouraged to carefully review these criteria before applying.)

    A "qualifying business law article" must be on a topic involving statutory law, common law, regulations, or other aspects of business law.  A "qualifying business law article" excludes subject matter focused upon pedagogy, ethics, and ESG, in order to help demonstrate recent scholarship which supports existing core substantive business law curriculum in OCOB.

    Experience in teaching business law is strongly preferred.  Business practice experience (law firm or in-house) is strongly preferred.  Interest in pursuing opportunities for funding, or participating in grant activities with colleagues is also desirable, but not required.

    Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.  Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
