Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama.
LSA provides free, client-centered, civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities.
In support of LSA's ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice to build experience with a nonprofit civil legal aid law firm located in Alabama. This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA’s statewide offices in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.
LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of social injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will advocate for clients, coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.
Qualifications: The position is an exciting opportunity for candidates who will be sitting for a Bar Exam in July 2024 or February 2025 or who are already licensed in any state. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law along with lived or other meaningful and sustained experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required, and initiative and creativity are preferred. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual.
