    The Saturday Library Assistant staffs Freel Library on Saturdays during the academic year. The Library Assistant collaborates with other staff to open and close the library building, answer basic informational, directional, and technological questions, circulate materials, and monitor building conditions. They also participate in ongoing and special projects and may oversee the work of student assistants who are scheduled to work during their shifts. The overall purpose of the position is to support student success and well-being by expanding the library's ability to provide equitable access to information, learning spaces, staff support, and programming.

    Responsibilities:
    During the academic year, provides library staffing on Saturdays; occasional (optional) opportunities for evening/weekend substitute hours.
    Collaborates with other staff to open and close the building according to established procedures.
    Staffs the library service desk, circulates items, answers basic informational, directional, and technological questions, and refers more complex questions to reference librarians or other campus offices/services as appropriate.
    Contributes to ongoing and special projects, in consultation with full-time library staff.
    Performs periodic walkthroughs of the building, records door and head counts, and enters data.
    Monitors conditions in the library facility; addresses behavioral issues; communicates with after-hours Facilities, Public Safety, IT, and Student Affairs staff as appropriate. Follows established protocols for staff and patrons during emergencies.
    Communicates with weekday library staff using established channels to remain current on library and college-wide developments and share information about Saturday library operations.

    Job Requirements:
    1 year of experience providing direct services to the public in a library, retail, or similar setting.
    Ability to reliably and consistently work on Saturdays during the academic year (approximately 30 Saturdays per year, September-May, excluding breaks in the academic calendar).
    Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and effectively with the public and respond to questions and needs in a timely and professional fashion.
    Demonstrated familiarity with and ability to provide basic troubleshooting of software and hardware commonly used in teaching and learning (e.g., office/productivity software; Windows workstations; printers/copiers/scanners).
    Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and apply policies equitably and tactfully.
    Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, solve problems, and employ sound judgment and discretion.
    Excellent communication/interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with patrons and colleagues in person and communicate with supervisors and weekday colleagues in writing using established channels.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    1 years of library work experience.
    Experience using an integrated library system.
    Familiarity with Library of Congress call number system.
