Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., is seeking a Nurse/Health Director to live on campus with our students during the BEAM Summer Away program. The role of Nurse/Health Director is a position that supports BEAM’s operations by fostering a healthy and positive environment for our students by safely handling medical conditions during the program.
This job is ideal for someone who wants to work in a low-risk environment this summer and loves kids. Our programs provide meaningful opportunities for middle school students with high potential in mathematics to build a community of learners in an immersive academic experience. We are required to have a health professional on-call and on-campus during the program, but while on-call you are free to do as you wish, giving you plenty of time to study, read, work on a project, or anything else you can do from campus. You're also welcome to join in our activities and bond with campers! Since we are an academic camp, we expect active responsibilities to generally be limited to times when students take medications and when they’re participating in outdoor and/or sports activities, with significant downtime even during on duty periods.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Program Prep
Staff arrive on site a few days ahead of students’ arrival to engage in training, build community, and complete important set-up work. As a Health Director/Nurse, you can expect the following to occur over 1-2 days pre-camp and to have support from 1 additional staff nurse(s).
During the Program
During the program, you will be responsible for a combination of regular and urgent medical tasks, including those listed below. You can expect to be responsible for approximately 40-50 middle school students, although some of your work will be consultative as other staff are trained in first aid, with at least two other staff being trained in advanced first aid and CPR.
Post-Program Wrap-Up
Qualifications
Above all, we're looking for people who are passionate about the work and impact of BEAM. It is much more important to us that we hire someone with the right approach than someone with a particular background.
That said, we are looking for the following qualifications:
Commitment to Diversity
BEAM believes that our staff, at all levels and across all roles, should represent the backgrounds of the students we serve. We are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Beyond a commitment to nondiscrimination, we strongly encourage applications from underrepresented and marginalized communities.
Compensation, Benefits and Other Details
Compensation
This is a 5 week, seasonal position. Remote training for this role may begin in early June 2024. Compensation for this role is $30 per hour for LPNs and $40 per hour for Registered Nurses.
Work Schedule
Staff program dates: June 20 - July 17, 2024 (including pre-program preparation and post-program wrap-up).
Nurses can expect to work shifts totaling a minimum of 40 hours per week, which may include some weekends and occasional overnight shifts. We offer the option to hire nurses to work primarily evenings and weekends. We also offer the option to live off campus if you are able to commute to and from the program. We will schedule your work hours before the summer and take into account your preferences and availability.
Hiring Process
We ask all applicants to submit an application, including their resume and answers to a few short questions. After reviewing your materials, we will contact you regarding next steps. We believe in the importance of demonstrated ability. Some applicants will proceed to an interview to allow our hiring team to learn more about their skills and experiences. We work hard to recognize the time you put into the process and we won't load you down with any unnecessary bureaucracy.
