    The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering is seeking a Lab Coordinator for its MakerWorks Space. MechSE MakerWorks is our premier maker space, empowering students with mechanical skills in three-dimensional printing, laser cutting, wood making, and metal making. These experiential learning spaces empower our engineers to lead the next generation of innovation at Fortune 500 companies and renown national laboratories.

    The Lab Coordinator is responsible for supporting MechSE MakerWorks Club in its daily operations and business, including creating applicable training materials for all machines and equipment, as we as inculcating the club’s values and policies throughout the MakerWorks space, which specifically includes Metal Maker Studio, Senior Design Studio A, B and C and the Jackson Innovation Studio. Collaborate with Director of MakerWorks regarding machine tool/power tool/equipment training, safety, maintenance, and instructional programs.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Education and Training
    • Collaborate with Director and MakerWorks Club to efficiently train all students via finding or developing and administering effective professional training modules and use policies for all equipment including 3D, Laser Cutter, CNC, programmable, manual, and hand equipment in MechSE MakerWorks via video and potentially universally available online content with quizzes and auto-grading/notification per university online resources and Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning.
    • Develop and promote student-to-student training and knowledge transfer to enable peer teaching, peer mentoring, and efficient upskilling by peers to allow dedicating majority of time to advanced skill training with time. Majority of video content to be coordinated with well-trained students performing tasks and giving training.
    • Promote the Five Shared Values of 1) be safe and professional, 2) own the experience, 3) act to earn trust, 4) respect people, machines and culture, and 5) leave it better than found. Creatively support student making and innovative maker culture via supporting MakerWorks Club.
    • Responsible for maintaining equipment and spaces in safe and functional working operation, while enabling and mentoring students in same. Seek feedback and involvement from MechSE personnel to maintain a safe working environment in harmony with OSHA and Division of Research Safety requirements.
    Operations and Support
    • Assist MakerWorks Club in tracking completion of training modules and schedules for all equipment Training and Safety courses. CAD/CAM systems training cared for by others.
    • Ensure all operations within MakerWorks space is conducted in compliance with training guidance and safety protocols. Stop all work that is not in line with accepted procedures. Report close calls or actual incidents/injuries to the Director of MakerWorks.
    • Assist MakerWorks Club, Director, and Faculty to identify and source large strategic purchases or donations to procure future technology ahead of university peers.
    • Support operations to help students acquire necessary materials and tools for them to complete projects.
    Perform other related duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
    • Attend regular meetings as requested.

    • Assist MakerWorks Club in discipline situations to determine appropriate handling within university policy.
    • Assist with webpage content suggestions and source material.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
    AND two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position
    OR
    Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.
    One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.
    NOTE: A Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Three years of experience in a large maker or hacker space with metal, wood, and plastic altering equipment. Three years direct, professional fabrication experience operating manual and CNC lathes and turning centers, manual and CNC Machining Centers, CNC waterjets, CNC EDMs, and wood shop tools. One-year direct experience with MIG and TIG welding. One-year direct fabrication experience programming and operating and maintaining 3D filament and resin printers. Two years’ experience in an instructional role training students or peers in lathe/CNC lathe, mill/CNC mill, 3D printing, wood machine tools, and welding.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Familiarity with Fusion360, CREO, Esprit, Siemens NX, and/or SolidWorks CAD/CAM systems. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and a willingness to mentor and support the inquisitive nature of engineering students. High-level understanding of shop mathematics, CAD/CAM, metrology, metals, woods, and materials. Skill with woodworking tools, 3D printing, laser cutter, and blueprint reading. Ability to diagnose, repair, rectify problems with machine tools and other equipment. Strong oral and written communication skills. Possess an understanding of shop operations, including general competency on all power tools and conventional machine tools. Ability to work with CAD files, loading to CNC machines, and understanding line code. Affinity for and ability to use video recording equipment and editing software. Intermediate computer competency in the use of email and internet. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks.


    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Laboratory Manager position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary is commensurate with experience. The hours for the position are M-F, 2 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
