DIRECTOR OF CHORAL ACTIVITIES / ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC

  • Northwestern State University is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music to begin July 1, 2024. The successful candidate will lead a nationally recognized choral program fresh off a performance at Southern Region ACDA. They will work collaboratively with the choral and vocal faculty to administer and coordinate all aspects of the 4ensemble choral program including performances, rehearsals, auditions, and managing the choral library, and will be expected to be an active recruiter for the Choral/Vocal program. In addition, the candidate will be expected to organize on-campus events for regional high schoolers that could include All-Honors High School Choral Day, All-State clinics, Voice Day clinics and performances, and the summer choral camps. The primary teaching responsibilities will include at least two choral ensembles, directing and teaching Music Education courses such as Choral Conducting, Seconda1Y Choral Methods, Choral Literature, or other courses in the music curriculum according to the candidate's qualifications and the program needs, including courses in the Graduate curriculum. Additional service through committee work or administrative support for the Music Program is expected. The successful candidate will also plan and execute choir tours to strengthen the college's regional reputation and will be dedicated to developing meaningful working relationships with students, faculty, and staff across campus as well as high school and college choral directors throughout the region.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    l. Minimum degree—Doctorate required; ABD will be considered.
    2. Evidence of successful teaching experience at high school and/or college level in choral conducting and choral music education is preferred.

    • Shall be credentialed and in good standing by relative credentialing agencies, if appropriate.
    • Shall be qualified to teach in the field of study.
    • Shall be effective in teaching the assigned subject material.
    • Shall meet the required standards defined by the University.
    • Shall be proficient in curriculum development, instruction, evaluation, and academic counseling.
    • Shall have a minimum of 5 years' experience or equivalent in the practice of the area of study, or as required by accreditation agencies.
    • Shall hold a DMA or Ph.D. degree in a music-related field (ABD candidates will be considered).
    • Be committed to excellence in teaching, service, professional growth, and scholarship.
    • Teach online, in-person, and hybrid courses; Submit course outlines and objectives; Maintain class schedules; Provide course instruction under designated outline; advise/mentor students.
    • Expected to teach at least two choral ensembles, vocal music education courses, and other choral/vocal-related courses as needed.
    • Expected to supervise vocal music education residency students as needed.
    • Supervise all aspects of the choral program including, but not limited to
      • Actively recruit prospective students.
      • Supervision and Management of the choral library.
      • Supervise on-campus events and other programs directly related to the choirs.
      • Actively participate and represent NSU, CAPA, The Department, and the choral program at state, regional, and national conventions as needed.
      • Establish and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, the choral and vocal faculty, ensemble directors, and other departments/programs across campus.
      • Supervise choral area scholarship auditions, contracts, renewals, etc.
      • Work with the Associate Choral Director to coordinate performances, tours, programming, etc.
      • Maintain and update the choral program's presence and information on the https://www.nsula.edu/music/website.
    • Utilize a variety of proven teaching methods appropriate to the targeted domain of learning.
    • Evaluate students and report progress.
    • Participate in periodic review of course materials.
    • Maintain appropriate expertise and competencies through continuing professional development and pursuit of scholarly activities.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of school goals and objectives.
    • Participate in faculty meetings and serve on all appropriate programs and committees in the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts and Department of Music
    • Participate in scholarly activities including grant writing, research, scholarly publication, and presentations.
    • Maintain confidentiality under federal laws and program policy.
    • Serve as an advisor and mentor for students in the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts and Department of Music
    • Serve as a Graduate Faculty Member, chair graduate student committees, and guide graduate research.
