    Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Department of Music at Greensboro College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music Education.  We are seeking an outstanding candidate for instruction of music, music education, and education fieldwork supervision and activities.  The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

     

    • Teach music pedagogy for 6-12 grades;
    • Teach instrumental or choral methods;
    • Teach conducting;
    • Supervise accompanying fieldwork experience courses to pedagogy courses;
    • Teach beginning methods courses related to the candidate’s specialty area (voice, brass, woodwinds, percussion or strings);
    • Teach a music theory or music history related course;
    • Assign public school placements and supervise student teaching and practicum experiences, including preparing students for NC state teaching certification requirements of the EdTPA process and PRAXIS II;
    • Advise music education traditional undergraduates and adult candidates seeking NC licensure;
    • Supervise music education majors in their professional participation in the specialty area professional organization required by the College Teacher Education Program, which for music education majors is NAfME and NCMEA;
    • Coordinate with Teacher Education Program;
    • Direct one performing group related to experience;
    • Regularly evaluate effectiveness of Music Education courses for state licensure and prepare annual reports on program effectiveness for the College, Teacher Education, and NASM;
    • Recruit music and music education majors in collaboration with Admissions;
    • Have active membership in NAfME and NCMEA.

    Qualifications


    QUALIFICIATIONS:

    • Doctorate in music education;
    • North Carolina teaching licensure or reciprocal state license;
    • Advanced performance skill on at least one instrument or voice;
    • Basic understanding of all band and orchestral instruments and vocal/choral techniques;
    • Experience as a conductor of instrumental and choral ensembles;
    • At least five years of experience as a public school music director/instructor.

    KEY COMPETENCIES:

    • Advanced proficiency in at least one woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument or voice;
    • Advanced conducting skills;
    • Sufficient knowledge of music theory, form and analysis, music history/literature, and orchestration along with pedagogical understanding to prepare students for PRAXIS II;
    • Skills in various music technology and willingness to adapt to new trends in music technology;
    • Skilled in researching new effective teaching methods and materials;
    • Effectiveness as a mentor;  
    • Effectiveness in collaborating with public school partners and other music educators.
