    Job Summary
    This recruitment will be used to fill three (3) full-time, seasonal (June – August) Biological Sciences Research Technician 2 positions for the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University (OSU).

    This position exists to support the project PI and Co-PIs, and graduate students on the BLM Pacific Northwest Tribal Conservation Corps Pilot Project for Seeds of Success by collecting botany data including plant vouchers, soil data and soil samples, wildlife eDNA data, and seeds. Will be responsible for helping store plant vouchers, soil samples, and eDNA samples appropriately, and helping transfer of soil samples for analysis to OSU and transfer of eDNA samples to the specified lab for analysis. May also assist with logistics. The person in this position will help build capacity within Tribal Nations in Oregon, including the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians by helping train and manage interns.

    Key Responsibilities
    75% Assist with fieldwork data collection, focusing on forest community ecology, which includes ethnobotany, silviculture, soil science, and wildlife surveys, and SOS seed collections . Help collect Assessment Inventorying and Monitoring (AIM) data per BLM protocols by establishing plots on BLM and Tribal lands. Help collect soil data (soil horizon characterization) and other related data in a soil pit in each established plot. Collect aggregated soil samples and SOS collections as needed. Secure soil samples and store in an appropriate manner, so as to not degrade samples. Transport samples to lab for analysis.
    25% Assist with developing relationships with Tribal Nations in Oregon. Tribal engagement activities include attending Tribal community events and supporting interns who are members of Oregon Tribal Nations by helping to create an environment that is welcoming for Tribal interns to learn STEM within the context of Indigenous Knowledge, and to incorporate cultural elements specific to Oregon Tribal Nations (e.g., ethnobotany) into the field experience of the Tribal interns. Utilize local knowledge of Oregon’s Tribal resources to help with field data collection and meetings with community members.

    What We Require

    Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.



    What You Will Need
    • Expertise in IK, including ethnobotany (ecology and uses of plants that are culturally significant to Tribal Nations), use of cultural burning, and traditional land uses.
    • Knowledge of Oregon Tribal land-management practices.
    • Soil science and ethnobotany field skills.
    • Ecocultural restoration skills, including restoration of native plants.
    • Ability to engage in project outreach.
    • Strong, positive pre-existing relationships within Oregon Tribal administrators.
    • Emerging leadership and management skills.
    • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.


    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

    Working Conditions / Work Schedule
    The field season (June-August) has an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., M-F, 40 hr/week work schedule. Fieldwork will require extended periods of standing, traversing uneven/very rough, steep terrain, lifting up to 40 pounds and working in heat (e.g. 90-105 degrees F). Camping will be required on occasion but crew members will be primarily based out of field houses. May require working on weekends or evenings to support cultural activities.
